I'm going to learn maths.

I've found a website that takes you through problems for each of the skills in the curriculum...

I went through the preschool skills yesterday.
I went through year 1 skills today.

I don't expect I'll be able to keep up that pace... But my goal is to get to gold proficiency (mastery) of all the skills up to and including year 12. Which should prepare me for university level math... I think... Depending a bit on the curriculum etc, I guess.

So... It graphs my progress for me, even :)

or...

100 push ups. google '100 push up program' and you find programs that take you from whatever you can do now... by a series of small steps... to wherever it is that you want to be.

1) ID your goal.
2) ID your map to your goal (the steps you will take).

Get started already!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing comes for free. Nothing worthwhile, anyways. Some days you won't feel like doing what it is that you know you should do. Do it anyway. See progress. Feel good about yourself. Win.

My goal is to better control my sometimes excessive reactions to relationship issues - o my god, this will never be right, I am a failure, etc. I am working on DBT and mindfulness meditation to learn to temper my responses.

Except for this, not much is wrong with my life. I have a good job, a nice home, some friends. I still suffer some from depression, but it has gotten much better.

yea....im fast to react in anger alot, with things being said to me, either if they where joking terms, i can get vary mad easily if people say things the wrong way...

but maybe for your case you can learn to program, or know what will happen wben similar things happen in the future....there's a term i go by, "not hoping for the best, not being bothered by the worst" which is not really a "encouraging" term, but it helps me cope with really bad situations that happen, being ready for the worst, both in a relationship, and events in life....

but its not a healthy way to think, but one way is maybe to slow down to those terms, im a failure, it will never work out....and map it out, just like alex said...im not a therapist but doing a bit of thinking on learning to be more optimistic on things that get on the nerves. I am a pessimist, i see things negative, even when they are positive, i see through it and see negative unpleasant, depressing projections, thinking whats the first thing that will go wrong.....

but anyways, im ranting a bit, maybe learn to have slow to anger.....and thoughts....

same here to me....

i hate math....i haaaattteeee math LOL, it requires lots of intellect thinking and fast problem solutions, logic terms....i just like to flow and not think about everything as an equation....but still for your sitaution, maybe go to the mathlab, and make a note that you will have study time of math, and note to yourself, "i will enjoy this" even thought it may be the most annoying thing to learn....which is for me....that's how i study....i tell myself through tricking my mind by saying "i enjoy this, its intresting"

the best thing is accuracy....learn accuracy and then move to speed, because if you learn speed before accuracy....its a pyramid upside down, has no foundation and won't work. Still having a cup of coffee won't hurt lol

why don't you maybe keep this up on babble, or somewhere to check your progress....even thought if i told this to myself i would say, whatever, no way.....

its a good way to start to teach yourself things, through both displine, and enjoyment.

I have a couple of goals / desires: stop drinking alcohol & start exercising. So far,so good. A beer or two at dinner once a month is permissible. I usually have a couple of beers when I go out to dinner with my dad.

ok...maybe you could cut down, but still i understand, when i want a beer....i have a beer, and i don't think its serious problem when someone has couple beers, it turns into a problem when someone can't stop, having 3 shot of tequila, then 6 and it keeps on going until alcohol blackout....thats what i learned going to Alcoholics Anynamous meetings....can't stop, but just maybe slow down, have a beer once and a while....and yea...don't feel bad about it.

the only way to start wanting to excersise is getting that endorphin feeling or a runners high....start pushing maybe to run or jog and get that healthy stimulation from rapid blood flow....thats what gives the runner's high....also there's a thing to do where you trick the brain into thinking it likes excerise, just keep telling yourself "i love doing this, i love doing this" even thought how much i hate vigorous running....it does work

maybe start a log?

why do you hate math?

i hated it because i never learned any of the procedures. and i thought people just rote learned a bunch of facts without any understanding, which was pretty boring to me.

this site is teaching me differently, though. i get it conceptually... then the computations become faster / automated by repetition. it is okay to have a guess and get it wrong - because feedback is immediate. you need to get a certain number correct in a row (including ones you messed up in the past) in order to have demonstrated mastery. A lot of it isn't hard at all (really). it is more that it is... priming you for how to think about the next task. to make that easier.

i'm getting much faster at doing sums :) and starting to 'see' how things make 5 while simultaneously keeping track of 10's... i see how people add numbers quickly... i need much more practice... but things are starting to come together for me... and i'm only part way through year three lol...

i don't much enjoy the sums, truth be told. i like geometry more, even though i find geometry harder. i think it is just because mostly i'm doing sums at the moment. i do have to stop and think about some of them, though... odd numbers are... odd... ahaha. need to think about even numbers then adjust up and down accordingly... to make 10... rearranging... substitution... oh. hello, math.

> why don't you maybe keep this up on babble, or somewhere to check your progress....

yes. that is why i tell y'all that i'm doing this. so... if i'm tempted to not do my practice i think that someone might ask me 'how's your math practice going alex' and then i'd feel like a lazy slacker. so... when i'm tempted to not do my practice... i think of that... and it helps motivate me to do my practice. soon... i'll be able to post that i finished year three! i'm looking forward to that... so that helps motivate me to practice, too.

i've told a few people irl that i'm doing this, too. so they can also help hold me accountable. it can help to have supportive people who help remind you and encourage you. don't tell people your goals if those people aren't supportive... but then... people will eventually give up on you if they see you make a constant habit of making promises (to them, to yourself) that you don't keep...

sometimes... you only get to the enjoyment by way of the discipline...

if you want to get better at math... perhaps even learn to like it... well, you know how, now. if that was something you wanted to do. push-ups, too. these goals are easy (in a way) because it is clear whether you have made your goal or not. and because there are clear steps that can be identified along the way.

other goals are much much harder. like baseballs. doesn't mean those goals are less worthwhile or anything like that, but makes them harder. which can mean... they are tricky sorts of goals to have when you are just starting out on the path of actually doing something positive in favor of moving your life from where it is now to where it is that you want to be...

I'm more into strength training than cardio. Lately I've been walking around the neighborhood for light exercise. Yesterday I purchased dumbbells & hand grips so I can lift weights at home. I want to get stronger & lose weight.

Keeping a workout log is a great idea.

i read your post....repetition, and accuracy is what makes perfection, then speed will come later. I looked up some math websites that may could help you on this....because i know math is tedious, simple math, and then algebra, and calculus are more analysis thinking, and require more than just repetition....its more compliated.

So here are some websites i googled:
http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/
http://www.gcflearnfree.org/math
http://www.mathplanet.com/

and this one you can pick which grade of math is learned, example, 1st-12th grade....
http://www.visualmathlearning.com/

keep doing it, and keep telling yourself "this is intresting, i like doing this" even thought you may not, you can trick the brain into liking something it doesnt like.

weighlifing is vary good, it tones mucles and does burn fat, belive it or not, yes it does.

The only thing with muscle traning is that it sore....so when it gets sore, apply cold, ice packs to the muscles and then after that jump in a hot tub, or put heat on it....believe me heat feels WONDERFUL on sore muscles and then a massage.

Why don't post, what you want to do for exercise here on babble...or...any other website that is supportive, or just journal it and keep track and motivated to keep doing it. Even though im posting all this stuff, to help... i do need to get to the gym...thats maybe an idea for me too....go back on a liquid diet

keep going!

My desire is to get a job, my goal is to stop blaming myself for not getting one. I need to stop calling myself a complete and utter failure and basing my self worth on my job.

ok.....a job, well where in the same boat...i am only going to school right now, and not a job, so maybe lets keep looking for some. There are some websites for jobs that you can look for....1 is monster.com...but its difficult becsuse not immidate, and it takes a long time to even be viewed by employers.....
the ones you may look for are:
indeed.com
snagajob.com
simplyhired.com

and one im paticular that may catch your eye is goverment jobs, which you can feel good for serving the US lol
usajobs.gov/

why don't you give it some thoughts....and same here to me....lol i hate looking for work, but its the only way to get successful and have a living that is active, browse through these websites, and if you want i can look up jobs around where you live.....but that's only up to you due to privacy reasons....

go kick those websites butt! find em! LOL

Yeah I used to be a big gym rat. I exercised three or more days a week, doing both cardio and weightlifting.

Right now I'm getting back into it very slowly as I'm so out of shape. A couple of days ago I bought some dumbbells and hand grips at Sports Aurhority. A pair of 20 lb dumbbells and a pair of 30 lb dumbbells. Cost me over $100!

I start off my routine with a few sets of press-ups, which is push-ups on your knees. Then I do a few sets of dumbbell bench presses. After all of that I walk around my neighborhood for a bit. I'm easing back into it. Eventually I'll advanceto regular push-ups and maybe jogging rather than walking.

I've also changed my diet. I'm incorporating more protein and salads in my diet.

And so far I feel better!

don't forget to do some pulling movement to balance out the pushing (push-ups and bench pressing are both pushing movements - they work your chest but not really your back).

one i like is to find a rail on your walk and pull yourself up to it. like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfTTDsBwLkk

if you have forward hunched shoulder posture (as lots of people do who do lots of computer work) then some athletic trainers reccommend as much as 2x the volume of pulling to pushing (to help fix the imbalance)

thats good seriously......why don't you keep a note, cardio is good for cirulation and blood flow, healthy heart, and is good for weight management, weights are good for toning the body, making the muscle shape the body.....

i've beeen a on a liquid diet before, pure high protein shakes for 3 1/2 weeks and lost 20lbs....liquid diets are fast for weight loss....but if you don't have a problem with weight, weightlifing is maybe better....because toning the muscles is gonna reshape the body.

definetly get more protein, there are some supplements that support muscle growth at the health food stores, i have to look them up first....i just know there is supplements

keep the carbs at moderate amounts....not high but not too low....

kick it, go for what you want...goal time!
