Folate in some people can worsen depression and cause mood swings. This is what happened to me. Probably because I already have high histamine levels, the folate makes it worse. I say that happens in some people. In fact, a lot of people actually get well when supplementing with folate and B12. I just happen to be in the other category who doesn't do well with folate. Scroll down a little and I've posted an article that is somewhat enlightening about abnormal brain histamine. It should answer some of your questions. Sorry, but I don't know of reliable tests for histamine levels. According to this article, apparently your histamine levels can be evaluated, but it doesn't give you specific information about any tests. I think you'll have to talk to your doctor if you want to know more about your histamine levels. This article gives you an idea of how to balance your levels using supplements. It's very insightful. Just scroll down a little.
Of the many biochemical imbalances I've seen at Health Recovery Center, over the last decades, abnormally high histamine levels (histadelia) has certainly caused the most frustration as well as monetary losses.Typically these histadelic clients sweep into my office in high arousal about life in general. Being compulsive/obsessive people, they have come for an instant fix. Usually they are seriously depressed and may even have suicide attempts in their own or family history. They don't sleep much or well. They cry at the drop of a hat and are terribly impulsive. Those who have tried drugs tend to get hooked on heroin or other narcotics and sometimes alcohol. All of these block histamine and improve their symptoms temporarily. Many have successful careers, fueled by their remarkable drive and energy. But they are crumbling internally from continual tension and depression. I gradually began to recognize a pattern repeating itself with each new histadelic client:
Enthusiasm ran unrealistically high the first few days, but there was no staying power ... often before the first week was over, these clients impulsively lost interest, abandoned their program to return to drugs or to pursue some new-found project down another road. I finally recognized the similar characteristics of these dropouts. Their profiles fit perfectly with Dr. Carl Pfeiffer's description of high-histamine persons! I realized we must intervene immediately if we hoped to hold their attention. We began using Dr. Pfeiffer's formula for lowering histamine, that appears later in this chapter. These natural histamine blockers turned the tide. They make enough difference early on to thwart the impulsiveness of these people.
Now we rarely lose histadelic clients, and they are some of the most vocal supporters of these methods, once they are well.
What Histimine DoesI'll bet your concept of histamine is of some vague body fluid that gets released in allergic reactions and causes sneezing, mucous, and swelling. You may not realize what serious mischief this chemical can do. Inside the brain it has an important role, in all sorts of reactions. It causes our tears to flow, determines our pain sensitivity, and our sexual libido. If brain levels get too low we become paranoid and suspicious, our ears may ring, we may see or hear things abnormally. We will probably make grandiose plans but never have the energy to carry them out.
When brain histamine levels soar out of control, other frightening symptoms occur. The tendency to hyperactivity, compulsive behavior and black depression increases as histamine rises abnormally. We may grow obsessive about sex, have abnormal fears, compulsive rituals, cry easily and may even think about suicide often.
Many high-powered, energetic politicians and public figures show this high histamine combination of obsessive drive and high sexual libido. Without their abnormally high histamine, they would lack the stamina to fuel their careers so intensely. Unfortunately, their accompanying high sex drive sometimes is their undoing, despite being splendid statesmen in every other way. Once we see ourselves and others in the light of the chemistry we are dealt, we tend to become more understanding about the corresponding behaviors.
Science Finds A New Brain Regulation
The consequences of histamine imbalance in the brain was discovered at the New Jersey Psychiatric Institute in 1966 where Dr. Carl Pfeiffer and his colleagues devised a method for accurately assaying tissue histamine content, followed by the discovery that the blood (and therefore presumably the brain) of most schizophrenics contained abnormal levels of histamine.
They watched seventy-two chronic schizophrenics with abnormally low histamine gradually improve as levels were restored to normal. Another group of their patients showed highly elevated histamine. These patients experienced a marked reduction of symptoms as their histamine levels were brought down to the normal range.
It is now well established that over two-thirds of schizophrenics have abnormal histamine readings. However, many of the people we treat at Health Recovery Center also have marked histamine abnormalities and almost all are NOT schizophrenic.
How It Works in the Brain
In your hypothalamus, histamine stimulates the release of the important neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Another role of brain histamine is to counterbalance dopamine in that area of the brain that filters sensory information coming into your brain. With too little histamine, dopamine levels are elevated. The result of too low histamine can be thought disorders or even hallucinations that feel like your mind is playing tricks on you.
Other psychiatric symptoms develop when too MUCH histamine heightens and distorts the release of these key neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. When abnormally high, histamine will cause over stimulation, aggressiveness, compulsivity, and a racing brain (among other symptoms.)
Histimine and Prostaglandin E1 Appear Linked
Histamine levels and PGE1 levels (made from Omega 6 essential fatty acids) have recently been shown to move in the same direction. The same natural substances raise and lower both histamine and PGE1 in the brain and body. Their interrelationship is significant as we set out to repair the many psychological and psychiatric problems that their abnormal levels trigger in us.
Description of a Low Histimine ChildDr. Linus Pauling in Orthomolecular Psychiatry gives us a composite case history of a low histamine person:
"The patient is a hyperactive male child who is unnaturally healthy. For example, the rest of the family may get head colds, but this low histamine child misses the cold, or the virus infection fails to produce a rhinitis. He is hypo-allergic ... he may show no signs of pain even when seriously bruised or when a venous blood sample is obtained. Corporal punishment is relatively useless because a slap causes little pain. The child is constantly active and sleeps poorly. His attention span is short so learning is poor. Although his ability in some areas may be high when tested, a high degree of disperceptions may be present, such as sensory, time, body, self, and perception of others."*****
A good example of this profile is Seth, whose parents begged us to test him for imbalances, as he was "unmanageable" at age four. Seth was a chubby, fair skinned, youngster who was phenomenally healthy: no colds, earaches, or infections. He seemed continually agitated and frustrated, sometimes exploding into temper tantrums. In one of these rages, Seth crushed a light bulb in his hand but showed no pain. His mother said he did not react to any punishment for his antics so discipline had proved relatively useless. His parents were at their wit's ends to manage him.
Seth's lab tests showed histamine levels that were abnormally low. We also checked for food and environmental allergies, heavy metals and nutrient deficiencies. Treatment mainly centered on raising his histamine into the normal range, by using a formula similar to the HRC Low Histimine Formula found in Depression Free, Naturally. Diet also played an important role. A high protein diet worked best as it provides the needed amino acid histidine, which easily converts to histamine. Refined carbohydrates, i.e. sugar, white flour, junk foods, were prohibited. Seth had been living on white flour in the form of white bread sandwiches, crackers, potato chips, and pasta. He loved cookies and sweets. The family loved colas and kept a ready supply on hand. Seth's special diet needs meant no more junk food in the house.
Within a few weeks the tantrums stopped, and a calmer, more alert youngster emerged. Seth was fortunate to be able to correct his chemistry at such a young age. I often see adults in mid life who have wrestled with too little histamine all their lives. They don't know what's wrong with them but feel instinctively its bio-chemical.

Copper and Low Histimine
A recent client was living on two anti-depressant drugs, Wellbutrin and Effixor, but still felt anxious and depressed and had bouts of crying. Brett complained that he had lost his sex drive, tired easily, felt irritable and frustrated most of the time. His growing paranoia had affected his job relationships. Lab testing showed not only low histamine levels but abnormally high hair copper: eight times the normal level. The toxic effect of copper stems from its properties as a nervous stimulant. Excess copper creates histapenia (low histamine) by decreasing histamine in the brain. Copper contains the enzymes that regulate histamine, and too much copper allows histamine degradation to take place. The lowered histamine levels in turn, allow more copper to accumulate.
High copper in the brain can cause a state of restlessness, insomnia, violence, depression, irritability, paranoia, and high blood pressure.
The HRC formula for Low Histimine found in Depression Free, Naturally includes generous amounts of zinc, manganese, niacin (B3) and Vitamin C, all of which lowers copper. It is also imperative to avoid all multivitamins that contain copper.
A Susceptible Blood Type
Bret's blood type is A, and Type A's are far more prone to sequestering copper. Among hospitalized schizophrenics there is a disproportionate number with Type A blood, and fifty percent of schizophrenics are histapenic! A young Type A women with histamine levels of twenty two (the norm is 40-60 mg/ml) told me after four months of raising these levels that her "voices had stopped and she missed them".
Copper and Post Partum Symptoms
Post partum psychosis also has, as a likely cause, greatly elevated copper and ceruloplasm due to increased estrogen levels during pregnancy. Up to eight percent of female mental hospital admissions follow a psychotic break within two weeks after birthings. Symptoms are disorientation, depression, sleep disturbances, self-destruction tendencies, and paranoia. The mother may biochemically be so distraught that she rejects her new baby. The same low histamine formula found in Depression Free, Naturally may be used to reduce copper levels. If no treatment is given, the copper will gradually drop to normal over the next several months, finally giving a total remission of her psychosis.
The Paranoid ProfileMany paranoids become night owls, partially to avoid social contacts, and cut the stress and noise that is prevalent during the day. Dr. Pfeiffer points out that the geo magnetic forces of the sun, which have been shown to influence the schizophrenic, are also lessened at night.
Going without sleep for several nights will produce paranoia. Certain drugs like cocaine, amphetamines, or acid (LSD) will produce paranoia by interfering with normal sleep. "Alcohol, barbiturates, and sleeping pills can unmask latent paranoia". Dr. Pfeiffer tells about one of the doctors at his hospital who was on Nembutal and who often turned in a fire alarm when the setting sun was reflected in the windows at the hospital!
An anti-epileptic, Dilantin, destroys folic acid, which will finally cause severe paranoia and a state of low histamine over several years of use. The birth control pill also raises copper and can cause similar problems. Accumulation of copper in the brains of aging people produces hearing loss and paranoia.
The prevalence of deafness is as high as thirty percent among younger paranoiacs. The paranoid person has a real genius for detecting tiny inconsistencies, adversities or criticisms in life situations, which no one else notices. These get blown out of proportion in his mind and overemphasized. The biochemical imbalance that needs correcting is his high tissue copper level. The imagined enemy simply dissolves with biochemical rebalancing.
Walt Kelly's Pogo describes the paranoid dilemma well: "We have met the enemy and it is us."

High Histamine: A Formula For Success and TragedyHigh histamine (histadelia) traits run in families, and can well account for successful "dynasties", as such families are endowed with the kind of energy and drive that most of us only dream about. They are aggressive, productive, Type A people who drive themselves obsessively toward attaining success. The large histamine pools they possess, cause their brain neurotransmitters to over fuel and fire excessively. The following conditions may result:
1.) Histadelics are often over stimulated, almost manic; their compulsive drives may lead them to alcohol to break their inner tension and buy them some peace.2.) Sleep is a problem. They are light sleepers, usually needing seven or less hours. Insomnia can be severe.
3.) If histamine levels get too high, phobias, compulsions and blank-mindedness develop. These people are the perfectionists and the "doers" that never seem to know how to relax. Histamine increases their cellular metabolism so their body temperature may be above normal and they burn up their food quickly. Typically histadelics have no problem with weight gain. If there is a weight problem, it is coming from food and chemical allergies that set off hunger or binging. Upon identification and avoidance of these allergic triggers, histadelics will slowly lose unwanted body weight (this process may take a full year) and recover the natural high energy levels that their allergies were masking.
4.) Because of their elevated metabolic rate and higher body temperature, their bodies develop anatomically to help dissipate the extra heat: ears, nose, hands and feet may be enlarged. Fingers and toes are usually long. I often ask clients to show me their second toe. In a histadelic, it is frequently longer than their big toe. They also have very little facial and chest hair, again helping to promote more rapid loss of extra body heat. (This is the mate who keeps turning down the thermostat!)
5.) Suicidal depression puts these people at high risk because they have the energy to carry out a suicide plan and the impulsiveness to act quickly without thinking it over. Not all histadelics are depressed. It is not known why some have depression and others do not.
6.) Since histamine produces an abundant production of fluid secretions, histadelics have an overproduction of saliva that keeps their teeth free of cavities. (Sometimes, saliva is literally dripping from the corners of their mouth.) Sexual orgasms are easy because of their increased mucous. This mucous also accounts for assisting the smaller, faster male sperm to win the race to fertilize the egg, so high histamine families produce mostly male children.
7.) Most histadelics have a very low pain threshold and will over-react, to pain. Headaches and respiratory allergies are common.
The Kennedy Clan:
America's #1 Example of Family HistadelicsA classic example of high histamine genetics is the Kennedy clan: Almost all of them possess that tremendous, unrelenting passion to attain. We see it rewarded by the visible trappings of wealth and success, but the Camelot of these brilliant strivers also has a dark side - their compulsive risk taking has ended in tragedy many times. Their wild sexual exploitations have compromised their reputations. Their high tolerance for alcohol and drugs have ended in mayhem and death and even suicide (Bobby Kennedy's young son.)
I believe the increasing havoc occurring with each generation of Kennedy's is coming from the deteriorating status of their brain chemistry as alcohol, drugs and the stresses of life deplete them. If the younger Kennedys hope to regain the powerful hold that once was theirs, they should look to restoring that powerful balance of brain chemicals to its former status.
Drugs and Alcohol Attract Many HistadelicsFor years I wondered why these obsessive, driven people wanted to pump in cocaine, crack, amphetamines and tons of caffeine and sugar to further stimulate them. I finally realized many are attempting to lift a chronic black depression that does not respond well to antidepressants. The trick is to lower the histamine and often depression fades too.
More creative histadelics have discovered that opiates (heroin, morphine, opium, codeine) are strong histamine releasers. Alcohol also has some histamine-reducing action. Unfortunately, each of the above drugs has their own dark side. By the time such histadelics arrive at Health Recovery Center, their drug use has driven them right to the edge.
*****
Carla, a professional young women who was using both cocaine and alcohol in large amounts to control her black depression, drove from the east coast to Minneapolis seeking help from Health Recovery Center. She then spent three more days cruising around the center, "checking us out". I finally had the opportunity to talk to her and ease her mind. I could tell she was histadelic as she recited her history. She felt suicidal and exhausted, but kept pushing herself. She could handle a quart of alcohol without a hangover. There were many physical complaints: joint pain, headaches, hay fever and stomach aches. Carla had a mouthful of gorgeous white teeth, and long fingers and toes. She was thin and attractive yet said she ate every hour because of hunger! Her life story included a suicide attempt, despite much success in a high powered sales position . Now, alcohol had started to own her. She was caught in her own scheme. No longer could she do her chemical balancing act of quieting her obsessive drive with alcohol and then relieve her depression with cocaine. It was killing her! She had been to a standard type of treatment program a year ago where she spent thirty days telling a group of strangers the intimate details of her life. The experience did nothing to control the pools of histamine that fed her suicidal depression and inner tension. She said she feared I was about to sign her into the same kind of "treatment".
It was only when I began to describe to her all the earmarks of her chemistry and what had to be done biochemically to finally bring relief, that she began to trust me.
It's been over a year since Carla completed the Health Recovery Center program ... Her recent letter told me she is still on a strict diet and taking her regimen of natural chemicals, and she is STILL SOBER AND FREE OF DEPRESSION. She described her recent activities: applying for, testing and getting three new positions. (She settled on the best one.) She bought and sold two houses in the last month, works out at the gym three days a week and takes skating classes four times weekly... etc. So here is a (still) high histamine person whose strict controls allow her the joy of accomplishing, without the pain of depression or the inner tension of being driven to perform.
*****
That balance had to happen BIOCHEMICALLY. Talk therapy changes nothing.
The High Histamine ChildMost histadelic children are very self-motivated and achievement-oriented. However, some are so self-directed that they resent giving up their control to a parent or teacher. They can't stand being told what to do by adults. These youngsters become disruptive within their families and classrooms. Physical discipline only causes their behavior to intensify. They may not easily make friends with their peers, preferring much younger children or adults. If counseling is pushed, it typically will be a failure. A diagnosis of "oppositional defiant disorder" often results. These children tend to get obsessively hooked on activities. This can be advantageous to the child who pursues learning or sports, but will present problems if the focus is on negative activities like playing video games excessively.
Drug use among histadelic (high histamine) teens is five times as likely as with histapenic (low histamine) young people. These drugs steadily worsen their nervous system imbalances. If they start cigarettes, they may become chain-smokers. It is important to channel their compulsive-obsessive tendencies into productive activities.
If you suspect your own child fits this category, a blood test will be able to pinpoint their histamine levels. Usually no drugs are required to lower histamine, as you will see from the formula a the end of this section. To have high-normal histamine levels is a real blessing. The natural energy and drive to succeed in life gives this type a competitive edge. The danger lies in letting histamine rise to such high levels that there is suicidal depression or impulsive sexual addiction or obsessions that are uncontrollable.
Sexual AddictionThe high libido of the histadelic seems bound to set them up for trouble. Being loyal to one mate is a big order for someone who is addicted to the joys of sex. I have had clients who describe their compulsion to pick up a prostitute, or cruise porno bookstores and peep shows, as being a part of their regular activities. They claim this addiction is not unlike alcohol or drugs, which seems to build up, the longer they try to abstain. Finally, there is a period of binging on these activities. Others simply have multiple affairs. The employee who is sexually harassing co-workers through inappropriate touching or sexual language, may be suffering from a sexual addiction. Therapy is certainly needed but as important, is modifying the out-of-control histadelic libido by lowering the histamine levels.
Suicidal DepressionOut of control histamine levels lead to serious depression in about one-half of histadelics according to a study by Carl Pfeiffer MD. He offers as examples of probable histadelics who died a suicidal death, both Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe. Miss Monroe once remarked to news photographers "my most perfect feature is my teeth-I have no cavities." (Only a high histamine person would be able to bathe her teeth in so much saliva that no decay takes place.)
If you are histadelic, you may have several suicides in your genetic history. The depression that plagues such people, does not respond well to anti-depressants and not at all to shock therapy. An early diagnosis of excessive histamine, is important to safeguard you against your own compulsivity to deal with your inner tensions and suicidal ideations by impulsively deciding to end your life.
I cannot help but think of the suicide of my own teenage son which seemed to happen without warning. He had many histadelic characteristics: overabundant energy, always active yet his room was unbelievably neat and orderly. He ate continually, but was lean and lanky. (rapid metabolism) His teeth were in excellent shape. In many ways he was a perfectionist and very creative. His decision to take his life came without warning to anyone. Yet his eyes were so full of depression, how could we miss it? (I see that look, still, in the eyes of many new clients.) Rob had a wild love life, unbeknown to me. At his wake, girls I had never seen before described to me how they had climbed in and out his window late at night. His casket became a repository of love-notes. (At the time I was shocked.)
So there are warnings signs that the ordinary brochures about suicide don't mention. The most likely candidates are the compulsive, depressed histadelic kids and adults. The table below shows that with treatment, depression is often lifted quickly, but compulsions with abnormal fears are the most difficult to treat, and the last symptoms to go.

How To TreatHistamine levels will decrease and symptoms lessen in response to daily doses of methionine, an amino acid that significantly detoxifies histamine by methylating the ring structure forming N-methyl-histamine in the brain. Typical dose is a 500 mg capsule taken four times daily. Calcium, taken morning and evening, releases additional histamine stores and lowers levels in the body. With magnesium, it acts as a natural tranquilizer.
If your histamine level is extremely high, your physician may prescribe the drug Dilantin (phenytoin) that works rapidly to interfere with histamine and bring levels back to normal. The dose is 100 mg morning and evening. I have not liked the side effects that I've watched from Dilantin, so its' use should be reserved for difficult cases only.
Avoid a high protein diet as most proteins contain histidine, the amino acid from which you will synthesize even more histamine. A preferable diet is one high in vegetables and fruits.
The Health Recovery Center formula has other substances specifically addressing compulsive/obsessiveness. A study by J. Yaryura-Tobias, M.D. established that TRYPTOPHAN and its co-enzymes VITAMIN C and VITAMIN B6, stabilized compulsive-obsessive patients within six months by using tryptophan to increase serotonin, the brain's calming neurotransmitter. Dosage is one 500 mg capsule, twice daily between meals. This dose combined with a small amount of Prozac (5 milligrams per day) seems to work amazingly well in difficult cases. I suspect Dr. Yaryura-Tobia's study would have produced results even earlier than six months if he had combined his regimen with INOSITOL. An Israeli study recently appearing in the American Journal of Psychiatry reports that the B vitamin, Inositol, effectively eliminates symptoms of compulsive-obsessive disorder over a SIX-WEEK period, and unlike current drug treatments has absolutely NO side effects! Inositol works by regulating the action of serotonin within the nerve cells. Inositol has a soothing effect on spinal-cord nerves, the brain and cerebrospinal fluid, and produces anti-anxiety effects similar to the drug, Librium. Dosage is one and one half teaspoons of inositol powder three times daily with meals. This powder tastes good ... it's mildly sweet.
Histadelics also benefit from raising depleted levels of ACETYLCHOLINE in their brain. Taking precursor phosphatidyl choline can do this. Acetylcholine stabilizes brain membranes, greatly improves mood, and restores short-term memory. We use CDP Choline. Avoid taking multivitamins or B-complex vitamins that contain folic acid and B12, both of which INCREASE body stores of histamine. You will want to take the other B vitamins separately, as they play a huge role in stabilizing your nervous system.
A Word About Getting Your Doctors CooperationIf you fit the profile of too high or low histamine, you deserve to know with scientific accuracy what the real picture is. As you go about scheduling your tests, you may discover that not all doctors think alike (or have even heard) of this relatively new research.
I urge you not to be dissuaded from ordering the confirming lab work. If your doctor is unwilling to cooperate, it is time to find a new physician who cares. Refusing you this needed information doesn't affect your doctor at all, but he may be condemning you to a lifetime struggling with an out-of-balance brain. Appendix B in Depression Free, Naturally has a list of medical organizations that will provide you with names of physicians in your area who will work with you.
