For the last 9 years I've been studying the Chinese internal martial arts. There is a lot of meditation and body sensitivity training. When you do Tai Chi for example, you move slowly because you are paying attention to the smallest sensations in your body and the link between the mind's intention and the body's response. After a while you get a good sense of what's going on with your body and mind. Then you start to notice how different foods, drugs, emotions, attitudes, people and environments affect you. As for experimenting with supplements, try to reduce the number of variables and make observations. It helps if you are somewhat stable so you can tell if a change is really doing something.
