I have two cats. One is a tortie siamese mix that I've had for seven (!) years; her name is "Bella." My little one is a year and a half old; "Ama" is a Snow Bengal (no, I didn't pay for her, I took her in!). In the tradition of most of my academic mentors, the names are short for very elaborate, esoteric things. "Bella" is short for "Isabella d'Este" the great patron of music c. 1500 in Ferrara and Mantua. "Ama" is short for "Bradamante," one of the maiden-warrriors from Ariosto's _Orlando Furioso_; it fits her fiesty, athletic personality. Ok, so I'm a history geek....
I can't imagine not having pets! We always had cats and dogs growing up. For a while when I was little my mom worked at the Humane Society, and then I had dozens of animals to love on (and, sadly, lose--but I hardly recall that part).
