Rethinking my supplements...

Posted by Christ_empowered on September 27, 2011, at 20:59:20

I was taking high doses of several supplements. Now I'm not. It was time to reorder several of them, and I thought to myself: seriously? Plus, I realized that part of the reason I let myself go so much (in addition to medication-induced apathy and social isolation) was that I had all these supplements as a back up. Eating junk? Hey, I take 10 grams of vitamin C a day! Gimme another hamburger!

So...I'm back to square one in terms of supplements. I think I'm keeping several of them, but I'm going to rethink and then adjust the doses.

This is roughly what I'm either taking now or thinking about:

(1) Biosil--as directed (2) vitamin C--4 grams (3)vitamin E+seleium--1600 IU and 400 micrograms, respectively (4) green tea extract--1.5 grams (5)optizinc--1 30mgs capsule (6) b-100--1 tab, 2x daily (7) taurine--2 grams (8) niacinamide--3 grams.

OK, yeah, that's still A LOT, but I was taking some fairly massive doses (3 grams green tea extract, 6 grams taurine, 10 grams vitamin C, etc.) before, so this is a step in what I think is the right direction. Now that I'm not taking all that much daily (biosil, zinc, and some random other stuff), I find that I'm paying more attention to my diet. Also, my stomach doesn't hurt as often.

d3 and magnesium glycinate maybe

here's my recipe

NAC 1g 2xday
B complex (bio active) just started this one
niacin flush free 500mg
Magnesium glycinate 400mg ( with C B complex)
C 1,000mg
D3 5,000iu
selenium 220 mcg
zinc 50
meltonin 10-20 mg at night
B12 shots
folic acid 2,400mcg

I'm looking for a multi mineral so I can cut out the selenium and zinc and have less bottles and I've overlooked vitimin E. Do I really need the niacin? I don't know. folic acid is high too.

I don't know enough about supplements to say whether you need something or not. I will say that I've found niacinamide--the flush-free, non-cholesterol lowering form on niacin--to be quite helpful in reducing anxiety/agitation. I take 3 grams daily. It also helps my skin (I have rosacea).

Have you considered Magnesium glycinate with B6 and C for anxiety, I found it helpful, noticely helpful. Some things I take because it's part of my recipe but on there own I can't say they are helpful but some things I notice that when I run out I get increase in anxiety and depression. NAC and Magnesium definately help, I think D3 5,000iu is helping to. I take zinc too, I think I forgot to list it. I'm targeting anxiety and ADHD more then depression. I don't use herbals for a lot of reasons that add up to fear of unknown cross interactions.

I'll have to look into that form of magnesium. Thanks. The niacinamide+other stuff seems to be helping a good bit. High-dose niacinamide is both an antioxidant and a mild tranquilizer, so it helps anxiety and heals the body. Above 3 grams/day, though, it can cause elevated liver enzymes. Its also useful, along with other antioxidants, in preventing TD, according to some orthomolecular shrinks (apparently, its so helpful it can even help in cases where high doses of old-school drugs are used).

Thanks again for your post.

I'm afraid of super high doses in general but I do take high b's, I been thinking to double my flush free niacin to 1,000mg.

Some people need the folic acid supplements for depression. I don't really do well on folic acid. Niacin in small amounts can help with depression, but I like to use regular Niacin rather than niacinamide. I use 250mg of sustained-release Niacin, no more than that on a daily basis, as I can not tolerate real high dosages. I say if your regimen makes you feel a lot better, stick with it. Vitamin C, green tea, etc are all very good supplements. I wonder about taurine, however. Is it really that good for depression? I have found that taking it once in a while helps with anxiety, but if I use it chronically, I start to feel as if it is not very useful at all to me. Maybe it's just me. I can't tolerate it very well, but I'm glad that you can.

high blood plasma levels of b-12 and folic acids help alheimers patients, seems to help cogniction and protect the brain from atrophy. Both grandmothers died of alheimers. I think both are helpful with other stuff too, I think ADHD?.

Why am I taking Vit C? I forget. I think it goes with my magnesium glycinate and B-6, p5p form. low mag is linked to so much mental and phyisical illness. Vit C has a role in nero transmitters I believe.

Anxiety, depression and ADHD are my targets.
