What's up Hombre, hope you are doing well.
I am taking New Chapter's Serofin. So far so good. I've felt some discomfort and lack of positive stimulation over the past week, but I quick Prozac cold turkey 2 weeks ago and I've only been on Serofin for a 11 days. I'm up to 2 softgels(1170 mg combined hypericin and hyperforin supercritical extract) and it's been 5 or 6 days now.
Hmm, Perika, Kira, or Serofin? Not sure really. I'm thinking Perika first because it is the more stimulating out of the three. She needs to give it at least 6 weeks before trying another SJW brand. Tell her to try to be patient as it may take 8 to 12 months before she finds the SJW brand that works best for her. Hopefully she feels good enough on her first trial that she does not feel the need to try another one.
If she does go with SJW, I would not bother with 5htp or tryptophan. And, if you get her on folic acid, only us l methylfolate. I'm taking 2.4 to 3.2 mg and I think it is helping, at least I hope it is. Have you heard of the antidepressant adjunct medication Deplin? It's just a highly concentrated l methylfolat, 7.5 mg per pill. L methylfolate helps to upregulate the production of monoamines, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. This is why it can be so helpful as an adjunct therapy to antidepressants.
I think the fish oil is a must. I would also suggest at least half a dose of a good multivitamin, Rainbow Lite and Supernutrition are good reasonably priced food-based multivitamins.
I say go with Perika first, add fish oil, l methylfolate, magnesium glycinate or taurinate, and a multivitamin and see how things go. Make it simple for the first 6 weeks or so, then you also know if Perika is really making an impact.
Does she experience a lot of anxiety as well or is it mostly dysthymic depression and fatigue? If she has a lot of anxiety, I would go with Serofin or Kira first-I'm biased toward Serofin. Also, She may do fine with a low dose of SJW, so tell her to keep it at one tablet/capsule a day for the first 2 or 3 weeks before considering going up to two. I only started 2 a day so soon because I was on a strong pharmaceutical and figured I needed and could handle a larger dose.
Good luck!
