feeling worse after multivtitamine

Posted by linkadge on March 20, 2010, at 19:04:46

I thought taking a multi would be a good idea, but I have been feeling substantially worse since doing so.

Perhaps I should stick to iscoated vitamins which I know help.

Yeah I've experienced feeling worse after multivitamin use. Different multivitamins may affect you differently, believe it or not.

I say stick with what works for you and eat the best diet possible.

What are iscoated vitamins?

I'm going to agree that brand can make a difference with multis. Recently I tried a popular drugstore variety (viactiv) after using a better quality one for a while and I developed hang nails. It was really weird. I did the experiment a second time just to make sure and the same thing happened.

I think it's possible that you're sensitive to one or more of the ingredients in the multi you tried due to your individual chemistry. For me, formulas with high amounts of B vitamins (popular since they are supposed to be energizing) seemed to make me anxious.

Some vitamins and minerals can cause nausea if not taken with a meal so that may be a factor as well. Keep in mind too that some contain extras that you may not necessarily need (for example, gingko, CoQ10, green tea extract, etc). Any one of the ingredients might be disagreeing with you.

If you want to try another multi, iherb is a good place to read reviews even if you don't shop there. I try to look for ones that contain better quality ingredients (for example, the P-5-P version of B6).

Finally you might want to take less than the full recommended dose, especially if you already have a good diet. I should warn you that it can be hard to swallow the large tablets if you cut them in half, though. They don't go down as easily when the shape is irregular.

I find that the choline bitartrate found in most multi-vitamins makes me feel much worse. So I restrict my multi-vitamin choices to those brands with little (less than 20mg) or no choline.

Currently, I take TwinLab Daily One Caps (without iron) which contains only 10mg of choline bitartrate and I take only 1 capsule every other day.

I don't rely on multivitamins either. I have felt better on them and sometimes worse. What works for me is taking a cocktail of several individual vitamins and minerals plus fish oil. You have to experiment a little to find out which ones help you and which ones do not. This may take some time and patience, but once you find a cocktail that helps you, it is well worth the effort. Some vitamins that may be beneficial include vitamins E and C, Vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6, and B12, minerals such as magnesium, manganese, and zinc, polyunsaturated fatty acids such as fish and borage oils, etc. Some people need extra vitamin D, especially during the winter. These are just examples of some individual vitamins that help me. It's really very subjective. Everyone's nutritional needs are different.

serotonin boosting vitamins seem to be making my depression worse these days. B6 makes me worse as has been folic acid.

Niacin and folic acid do make me feel worse, which is why I don't take vitamin B complex vitamins, just individual B's. Niacin definitely has an effect on tryptophan synthesis and folic acid can increase histamine, which for some people is not good if you are already a high histamine person.

Linkadge,

I have had a very hard time finding a suitable vitamin.

If I find one I like, the ingredients cause insomnia as alot of them are very high in the B's.

Anyway, I have one on order that is low in Bs and has alot of seemingly good ingredients. If it works, I will give you the name of it.

I definitely feel your pain.

For all of you looking for a great multi. The Immortality Institute(imminst.org) has formulated a really good multi that doesn't have too much of the crap that most multi-vitamins have in them. Just go to their website to get more information. I believe they are working with a company called Revgenetics on manufacturing this multi and marketing it. I think it will be available in a few months.

I looked on the website and didn't see anything.

Unfortunately, I misread the label on the one I ordered. For niaciniamide, it has 750mg. When I called the product specialist for the company, she said it was for people with diabetes. Argh!

Back to searching again.

I'll try to remember to come back here and tell you how to get it when it's available.

Thanks, I will keep a lookout too.

I just can't believe it is so hard to find the right vitamin. Every time I think I have one, there is always one ingredient that is way out of balance to everything else.

This is exactly why these guys are formulating a good one. I would go to the imminst.org website again. Stay on the main page and keep your eyes on the part of the screen that changes. It's like a highlights page.

How long more before this multi-vit is rolled out?

my guess is 1-3 months... i sent the final formulation to anthony today. now we are just waiting for prices & tech spec sheets on certain ingredients. we are working out specifics on the fat soluble compounds, ie: delivery mechanisms, particle size & bio availability.
