My Pdoc has recc. that I start a Quality multi-vitamin and 600 to 100mg per day of Omega 3,6,9 with proper balance of DHA & EPA ... need to know the best and weather to get it in liquid or gel caps. I have heard good things about Carlsons but I need more info...

> SnapperI promise you, you do not need any more omega-6 or omega-9 fatty acids. Your diet is already way overloaded with those.
I like Carlson's fish oil. It really doesn't taste fishy to me at all. If you want caps, I'd just use the cheap ones at Walmart or Sam's or Costco. Their turnover is so high that they're generally of good quality, and the price can't be beat.
I'd be targeting 5000 mg/day of fish oil, not 1000. More, if tolerated.
Take only with a meal. The biggest fattiest meal of the day, if possible. Your digestive system will more properly emulsify and take up the fish oil if there is a good fatty meal to trigger the process. Food reduces the chances of fish burps, which are not the greatest thing to have. Not good for people close to you, either. ;-)

> Hi Larry, thanks for getting back to me...after I put down Omega 3,6 and 9 I realized that the other 2 #'s were not really the most important. I have also done some further reasearch and found a website that looks like it is NOT the "fish oil" that is so neccessary and beneficial for us it is the EPA and DHA that are the highest of importance in getting benefits to our bodies and brains and what not. I am going to post this link and you may have seen it before but I think it has a lot of merit.....it is -- www.n3inc.com and if you go to thier site and read it thouroghly it really makes sense! I don't think it is internet marketing hype and hope that I am not wrong but from what I read, I am going to pursue the product. Check it out and let me know what you think. Yes $$$ is a factor but I will spend what is neccessary to treat my illness. Also why do you recc. the 5000mg range
thanks , let me know and also if that link is correct!

> SnapperYou're going to be spending a lot of money that you don't need to spend. That product is double potency in EPA and DHA, but they are using hype to sell these. The other fatty acids in the capsules are not "fish oil". They're using BS to baffle brains.
You'd get the same amount of EPA and DHA if you took three of the inexpensive capsules from Walmart. It's your money, but there's absolutely nothing special about this stuff, other than convenience. One capsule instead of three. And it would be a whopper capsule, at 1250 mg. A lot of people have trouble with the standard 1000 mg ones.

>Hey Lar, 'whopper capsule meaning size wise? and also if you rec. 5000mg range.....why 5000mg when my pdoc said only 600 to 1000mg if I can tolerate it. Sorry so many questions but have you read thier website and w/o a dought know that thier product is just pricier? Also from my understanding, it is the epa and dha that are the most important ....? would double the amt be bad? or just plain un-neccessary?
Thanks

I think what Larry is saying is that with this product you would be taking one very expensive capsule--that does nothing different from taking three cheap Walgreens capsules.
Most studies on using fisho oil for mood disorders or even plain health use more than 1000mg. Also remember--doctors are not schooled well on average in nutrition; and most in my experience a)knew a lot less about nutritional supplements than I did; b)were very negative about taking more than the official RDA despite the evidence out there that the RDAs are not enough; and c) most still even balk and grudgingly follow the mandate to recommend a small, basic vitamin/mineral supplement to their patients.
But it sounds like your doc is more open and schooed, kudos to him/her.
I always go to docs hoping for guidance in supplements, and am always more than a little disappointed. Usually they ask me to stop taking them altogether. Med schools simply do not follow research on supplements and do not requirte this from their students. Amazing and sad.
By the waym, you originally asked about capsules vs liquid fish oil. Some prefer liquid simply because tablespoon for tablespoon, it is more concentrated than what they can fit in a capsule--you need to take several capsules to equal the amount in a tablespoon. And it is cheaper. Having said that, I am much more willing to take 5 capsules than gag on liquid fish oil, and have fish burps all day....

Exactly. Thanks.
