I think there was a time here when a number of posters really enjoyed seeing a post start on one topic and end up on something completely different and unforeseen. I realize this is a separate point of view from the one currently under discussion here.
I was one of the posters who used to be thrilled when threads took unexpected, delightful turns. There was at times a very light-hearted, playful, creative quality about it. Because the posting volume was much higher then, with dozens of posts per day, threads could move into all sorts of unforeseen areas, and then wind their way back to the original topic. Sometimes one or two new threads would be "hatched" in the process as people explored different views and topics.
