Lithium, Memory, and possibility of a goiter

Posted by tonyz on June 16, 2009, at 15:28:04

I've read conflicting things about lithium regarding memory. Some say it helps and others that it causes some problems. I'm wondering what those that take it have experienced. I also heard from my pdoc that the memory issues only develop if the dosage is too high?

For those that take it, how often to you have your blood level checked? Any side effects? Do you take extra iodine - like maybe some seaweed snacks? I've also read that too much iodine can also trigger a goiter? What thyroid tests do you have taken?

The consensus from different doctors seems to be that I should be on a mood stabilizer. Lamictal seems to be the drug of choice, but I'm thinking I would prefer lithium.
