Hi Matt!
You can't use the elimination half life of a drug to predict how long the effects of that drug will persist after a single dose. Valium, for example, has a longer half life than Klonopin but for me the effects of Valium only last about 2 hours after a single dose. On the other hand, the half life of a drug is a useful predictor of how long the effects of that drug will persist after the discontinuation of daily long term use of that drug. Basically, what I'm saying is that if you're interested in using a benzo on an 'as needed' basis, you need to find out the duration of action of that drug after a single dose.... don't pay too much attention to its half life.
Is your dad epileptic? What were the effects of Luminal like for you? Was is very sedating?
I agree that you might prefer Ativan to Klonopin. For me, after a single dose, Ativan lasts about 8 hours.
Good day!
Ed.
