Serotonin 1A and Nature Magazine and Anxiety

Posted by BobS. on April 10, 2002, at 20:00:19

There are two articles in a recent (Nature 28-Mar-2002) detailing findings on the 5-HT 1A receptor and a propensity for anxiety. These articles are well beyond my comprehension, so I am looking for help.

I recently withdrew, after 7 years, from Paxil for all the classic side effects, fat, no sex. And I didn't think it really helped anxiety, other than the fact that it is so numbing that you can't be anxious on it. I am currently doing wonderfully on 1.5mg Xanax tid. However, I wonder about the so called down side of BZDs, namely memory problems. I don't know how one would know if they are having memory problems, but that is another matter. So I keep seaching for new drugs and answers.

So the questions are: Is 5-HT1A the culprit, or GABA-A, or both? Do these articles shed new light on the etiology of anxiety?
Thanks for your help.
BobS.
