The ocean

Posted by gadchik on November 8, 2011, at 10:19:53

Ive learned in my 40th decade, that going on a big, glitzy cruise ship, anywhere, anytime, makes me giddy w/joy.Its bliss beyond bliss. And its mainly just the gliding over the ocean that I so adore. To gaze out to sea and not feel an ounce of anxiety,or sadness,it heals me.I thought I was too anxious to get on a big ship and be in the deep water, but its the opposite,it calms me.And I meet so many people. I know I can just go walk on a beach, but its being out there, far beyond land, that I love.

My grandmother used to take us to the beach more than weekly during the summer. She was a brave woman because there were five of us. Maybe it's because we all sensed deep down, beneath her indulgent behavior, she was really nuts that we behaved perfectly.

Anyways, she would sit in her beach chair for hours while we played. I remember her remarking upon two things. The first was that young people were beautiful, and she enjoyed watching them. The second was that she tried to explain the
deep pleasure and sense of transport she derived from staring out at the green curve of the Atlantic. How ships in the distance would disappear behind the curving horizon.

I think she enjoyed our outings perhaps more than we did. Respite from a claustrophobic marriage.

Anyways gadchik, I'm not sure how I would fare at sea. Giddy and terrified maybe. Maybe just happy now that I am older to be so away from the land lights and noise and any distraction. That was how Kuai felt at night this past year. Even though it is an island.

I enjoyed reading about your grandmother & the ocean. Can you imagine dealing w/life w/o all the meds we have today? i guess alcohol was used for anxiety.I was too afraid to fly, ride a train,a boat, until I had cbt and klonopin. Now I do very well, and actually enjoy meeting all kinds of people on my travels.I never expected to get a thrill like the one i had the first time i cruised.I felt like i was 10,had so much energy, just stared and stared at the water! And when we sailed into blue, clear water-I just couldnt get over the beauty of it all,and sat there crying! But it was a happy cry!

:-)

How beautiful.

Wow. I am glad you have less anxiety and can do things. It sounds like a world opening up.

Yes, in the 'old days' I really don't know what was done after opiates and cocaine derivatives were banned. And for awhile in the US, alcohol was banned, too.

I had relatives that drank heavily or would disappear into wards. I was a child then, so I have no idea how people were medicated in wards in the 50's and 60's. I imagine it was not as therapeutic as interventions today....

Youre exactly right,a new world is opening up for me.I decided to be happy, and carefree. Its our only life,we get 1 chance.Depression could strike again, sure, and likely, but now is wonderful.

Gadchik I've been on two cruises to the Carribean before my thyroid went and the meds really began. Used to drink and a bit of xanax when needed. Bought myself a boat when lived in VA Beach. Favorite was going out on weekends. Haven't been in years. So you are feeling great now? So glad to hear. As for 50's and 50's librium, valium were out there are my parents took them. Alcohol was also allowed with them. I guess in the hospital I remember my Dad had what was called a nervous breakdown. He was not on a psych ward just a hospital room. Then it was rest and librium. I think the wards were for the really sick. Don't know for sure though. So glad you went on a cruise. Phillipa

Yes when in VA Beach and working bought a Sea Ray just 16 foot but was more than adequate for going into Waterside, and Portsmouth where the docks allowed you to tie up while you entered the Waterside mall which had stores restaurants. Was a lot of fun then. Love Phillipa

phillipa,I used to go to va beach every yr.We have even thought of retiring there, someday. But since ive gotten over some fear, now I go farther away.Boy,tho, those underwater tunnels used to scare the heck out of me.If there was major traffic, and it meant a slow crawl thru that tunnel,I'd be looking around the car for a beer(hubby driving,of course)and i'd have to chug 1 for fear of the dreaded panic attack! What'd you think of the tunnels? I like the idea of owning a boat, but a small boat.

Hi gadchik,

It's one of the smaller Hawaiian islands. If one is a thrill seeker, there all all sortsnof trips by helicopter and canoe into the park where Jurassic Park and Piratesnof the Caribean were filmed (I haven't seen the films, just repeatingnwhat I heard). Flying in, the sheer cliffs were lush emerald green.

For glitz and fancy hotels, there is the South Shore. We stayed on the north shore where it was very quiet and the
town was hippie-esque. We didn't need to drive more than five miles a day, and the Nepali Trail was spectacular (!) hiking. The trade winds just started blowing. At night on the north shore there were really no lights to speak of. Millions of stars and that warm wind. I actually loved being on a little dot in the ocean thatnthe wind blew the clouds over. I thought I might be anxious or have island fever, but didn't. I was sad to leave :-)

The water is warm enough that I went snorkeling!

Have you been to Hawaii? I wonder if you could take a cruise there. It's pretty far from the pacific coast of the US.

Trade winds...I want to experience that.Ive never been to Hawaii.I vow to go.I think I would fly in order to spend more time.I never snorkeled either, and want to try.Ive been too afraid,no more of that tho,I will do it.I have been to Bermuda several times, and of course, was overcome by the beauty, and the islanders are so friendly.Whenever they get on the public bus, they announce to everyone riding,"good afternoon everyone" or "good morning".If you dont address all when you step on the bus,it is the epitome of rudeness.

Gadchik really VA Beach also? My favorite place to live ever. Didn't spend much time in the tunnels. I worked on the Beach side so just the highways and traffic to contend with. Only if going say to Busch Gardens or DC when My Son Lost eyesight in Desert Storm did I frequent them. Not much traffic at the times I went through. But I sure don't trust the stucture not collapsing. My boat was small. Phillipa
