Wow. I am glad you have less anxiety and can do things. It sounds like a world opening up.
Yes, in the 'old days' I really don't know what was done after opiates and cocaine derivatives were banned. And for awhile in the US, alcohol was banned, too.
I had relatives that drank heavily or would disappear into wards. I was a child then, so I have no idea how people were medicated in wards in the 50's and 60's. I imagine it was not as therapeutic as interventions today....
