My latest stupid job interview questions

Posted by Poet on May 3, 2005, at 0:38:32

I am working as a temp, I am trying to find a permanent fulltime job. Today in a phone interview I was asked

1. what made you decide to do temporary positions?
2. why do you want to leave your current job?

What I wanted to answer with

1. when I was turned down for 20 jobs in six months it was decided for me by the bill collectors.

2. Because it is temporary, do you not understand the meaning of the word?

Argh.

Hmm. As one of my profs used to say when I didn't see how the logical expression of Russells theory of definite descriptions allowed us to get to 'one and only one' - I feel your pain.

Really.

How about:

1) Because I am fairly adaptable and flexable I liked the variety of filling in for different positions. It allowed me to learn a lot of skills and think about the sort of work that I would most like to do and the sort of work that is best suited to my skills / area of expertise.

2) I now think that I would really like to committ to (whatever you are applying for) full time because I have discovered that (whatever you are applying for) is best suited to my interests and expertise.

Too much?????????

;-)

I'd better keep my current job.

Because I'd probably sigh, pick up my purse, and say that I'm not sure I want to work for a company where the employees don't have the wit to adjust their prearranged questions to circumstances where they obviously don't fit.

Better yet...just tell them to go and take a flying f*ck! :-) It is called person-centered counseling...works really well, at times. ;-)

Hi Alexandra,

Would you like to do job interviews for me? I never seem to come up with smart answers to stupid questions that aren't smart aleck.

I'm going to use your responses and hope they don't press for why I left my last perm job. I say it was to care for a family member- well, I am a family member, aren't I?

Hi Falls,

I did manage to get an in person interview, so it looks like my answers weren't too sarcastic.

Hi Jay,

I would love to say that. I can think it and that'll put a smile on my face during in person interviews.

> Would you like to do job interviews for me?

Oh hell no. I hate them though people say I tend to come across fairly well.

>I never seem to come up with smart answers to stupid questions that aren't smart aleck.

Ok. The key there is to write down the sorts of questions they are likely to ask you before hand (you should be able to figure this out with your experience at job interviews) and then write down some good sounding answers. Try to make them so you feel comfortable with them. So they can roll off the tongue. Then practice. Find someone who can run through a 'mock interview' with you. Remember it is a BS process about talking yourself up.

> I'm going to use your responses

Ok. Feel free to modify them so you can use them confidently. If you tend to get phone interviews you could even use brief notes for the tricky questions that are likely to come up.

>and hope they don't press for why I left my last perm job. I say it was to care for a family member- well, I am a family member, aren't I?

Ok. Or you could say that you knew your perminent job wasn't something you wanted to be doing for the rest of your life. Temping gave you the chance to have a go at the range of different things you could do so you could really find your niche. And now you have found it and it just happens to be whatever it is that you are applying for...

Thanks Alex,

Someday I'll post my top 10 worst job interviews-they are hilarious, but sad 'cause they're true.

The queen of employment losers wants to end her reign of failure.

I seem to do great on phone interviews, it must be my looks that scare them. Damn low self-esteem strikes again. Sigh.
