My doctor recommended The Zone.

Posted by beardedlady on March 24, 2003, at 18:07:03

I saw my gynecologist today, and I told her I was having trouble with Weight Watchers, that, after a 16-pound loss (which took an entire year!), I have stalled. I can't seem to stick to it (always hungry), and I can't seem to lose any more weight when I do.

She recommended the Zone. She is a thin, petite woman who looks 45 and is 55. She has been on it for years (for maintenance and health, not loss). I told her I thought it was really hard, and she said it's hard at first, but it makes you feel good.

I understand the whole philosophy behind it (I've read the books), and I think the science is almost flawless.

I'm going to try it starting Thursday. And I've found a way to incorporate beer every other day, which is what matters most, of course.

Wish me luck. Anyone on the Zone or have any experiences with it? Anyone want to go on it with me and post support? (I'm staying with WW because I like the meetings; support is the key to diet success, I think.)

less beer-dy : )>

is beer part of the diet? saweet (nm)

Yeah, my internist is keen on Sugarbusters, which is based on the same concepts I think. She says if I follow it, I can put of diabetes for a while.

Beardy

I'm not familiar with the zone diet. At first I thought your doctor recommended that you watch some sci-fi show. You should be commended for losing 16 pounds.

Have you considered adding an activity that you really enjoy? My resolution for this year is to try and lose a bit of weight. I've been searching through old albums and it seems in the past few years I ballooned. I'm going to try adding walking every other day to my routine and getting outside every day, (fatigue is an issue for me.) And I'm a big bread eater so I'm going to try cutting back on it.

Whatever is your vice don't keep in the house. Make yourself walk to the store to pick it up. You'll be active and less likely to carry an excess quanity back.

Good luck, we should weigh in again at the end of the summer. All I've managed to do for the past year is stop gaining, which is a start for me. I also plan on quitting smoking, but gosh what will I put in my mouth then?

For anyone who's wondering, "The Zone" by Dr. Barry Sears is a diet philosophy based on balancing fat, protein, and carbohydrates in a 30/30/40 percentage mix (don't remember which one gets the 40%.)

I have used it and actually liked it once I got used to it. It works *very* well if you are suited to it metabolically but I do not believe everyone will be. Try it and see, I doubt if you can hurt yourself with it.

One caveat: I believe this diet will work well for a large percentage of *otherwise healthy* folk (healthy except for being overweight). In the presence of severe health problems it does not work nearly as well (severe as in my case, adrenal collapse.) I'm not saying it still wasn't a healthy way to eat -- it was -- I just lost the ability to lose weight on it, until I get adrenal and thyroid working again.

Dr. put me on Cortaz or something like that today -- it's late and I don't remember the name. Some cortisol supplement to make up for adrenal insufficiency. I look forward to the day when I can go back to the Zone, I really liked it. Right now I subsist on barely enough to keep a bird alive, in order to keep from dying of obesity (I'm not kidding.) My petite roommate eats about three times as much as I do and she has a slow metabolism. I stabilized my weight but by reducing food intake drastically (which in the long run is counterproductive, I know, but I have to live that long. My doctor is fully aware and working with me through this.)

Annnnyway, hope that helps. Good luck, beardy!! Let us know how it goes for you. In my experience, weight loss was painless and relatively quick -- I lost ten pounds of "winter weight" one spring without even noticing it, in about four weeks, on the Zone program.

(fingers crossed, wishing you luck)

Wish I could join you, but it sounds like it requires cooking. Did you watch the Academy Awards? There was a good joke from Steve Martin. As he introduced a hot young actor, he said "I'd do anything to look like him. Except of course, exercise and eat right." That's about where I am.

Thanks. I'm a good exerciser already, though. (nm) » Willow

Is that how the British say arm?

Jump in the shower, or better yet take a long bath, yet a sauna would be the best sure thing to clean the wax out!!

I'm watching "St. Elmo's" for the first time. Think that's the name. A commercial says phillip's magnesium will make you feel like your natural self. A little chickadee is playing on the pine bough which is blocking my view .

Love your accent,

Beardy

Saw an article in paper, under one of those doc things, a diet, you cut out anything with sugar and flour in it. If it has a grain as ingredient that's okay, but not flour. But you may need to cut out beer as sugar is part of it. Agh, let me go check on that.
