Taurine dose? Amino-acid complex?

Posted by MM on August 31, 2005, at 1:18:41

I read through old posts to try to answer my question but I found people taking many different doses so I was just wondering if there's any consensus or what experiences have been (as far as a Taurine dose for Bipolar/Anxiety/Depression). Anything I should be cautious of? In reading through the board I found I should get my mom on it too. I'm also wondering about an amino-acid complex. I don't eat much meat (maybe once a week, most likely chicken) as I have just never liked it much. I try to eat protein though, in cheese, beans, peanut butter, milk, but I'm sure I don't get enough of it. Would it be a good idea to take an amino complex? Thanks for any replies....I sometimes get the feeling that my posts are well, dumb or something or maybe even offensive? because I don't get many replies. Lol, if that's the case, please let me know as I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable.

Oh, your posts are fine.

Taurine is great of bipolar/anxiety. good doses are 500-2000mg/day.

Beware of some of the amino acid complexes, though. Many of them contain glutamate which is very bad for people with bipolar and depression. The Tyrosine component often also makes bipolars more edgy (particularly the rapid cyclers). Histidine is something else that should be avoided by some people as well.

Thanks so much for the info. I guess I'll stay away from a complex.

How long should it take before I notice an effect from the Taurine? I've only been taking it for 2-3 days (500 then 1,000mg) and I think it might be helping a bit but I'm not sure (I'm also not sure if it's just supposed to help with anxiety or depression or OCD type symptoms). Thanks,
Meg

Hi Meg!! your posts are quite valid, mant people
take amino acid complexes not realizing that certain amino acids work against each other for blood-brain transport!! i am actually headed to my health food store today to get more taurine, i want to start using it again, i read that in japan i believe they are trying it for ocd!!

i take prtozac for ocd and depression, but i want to add 1500 mgs. a day of taurine to see if it helps!! have a great holiday weekend Meg...john

Taurine for mood stablization as someone said is usualy 1500 - 3000 a day.So usualy two seprate 1500 mg doses.

Country life makes a tablet, very cheap,it includes b6,which helps it along as well as b6 adds a synergizing calming effect.

I found taurine without b6 not nearly as effective.

Also country life is a GREAT reputable brand, the bottle should be approx 5 bucks or so.

Just remeber dont go over board with taurine,it also has a half life.

Last u dont want to stock pile ur brain with taurine and cause an imbalance somewhere else,so if it begins to work, dont jump over board take it slow.

Taurine is an amino acid, take it with juice and no protien, the juice will aid its ride to ur brain,if there is protien present at the time of taking it ,it can bind to the proteins and the goal of isolating is ruined.Im sure u knew that just reminding.

Also cause its an amino acid,u can have results on the first try.

Go to google, use key word taurine dr bob. There is a great article there. (its a different dr bob)Good luck

Thanks Willyee. I didn't know about the b6 or the protein binding :), so I'll be sure and take it with b6 and juice. TY.

Hi Meg,

You've probably seen this post in the archives already but it is my favorite on taurine (the post is by Larry Hoover) and the whole thread is so helpful I thought I would pass along the URL just in case. The URL is http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/alter/20040613/msgs/365023.html
I take 1000mg taurine every morning, and it works well for me. More than 1000mg tends to make me irritable, while less does not have much effect. The thing I like most about taurine is that it keeps me calmer than I would be without making me feel more tired. I have noticed that it also seems to make it easier for me to exercise longer. But like you I have noticed that different people in Babbleland are comfortable with quite different dosage levels of taurine.

The other posters link in this thread is incredable, very informative and accurate, pretty impressive list of what taurine dose for the brain.

Also im inclusing a little bit more of a lamons article pretty simple,to compliment the link u were given in the other response.

This is a good page on taurine info as well....

So far, the major effect I notice from Taurine is that I sleep 12 hours when I take it and have a hangover when I wake up. It might help some with anxiety and obsessiveness, not sure about depression, but I don't want to sleep 12 hours a day....is it possible this will go away with continued use?

Wow, your experience is yet more evidence that everyone reacts to these things differently. My problem with taurine is that it gives me insomnia if I take it too late in the day! Something that makes you sleep 12 hours a day and gives you a hangover is causing more problems than it is solving. All I can suggest are the obvious things, try taking less taurine or just stop taking it altogether and try something else for anxiety.

I did stop taking it, but I might try it again in the future. It's possible that it didn't give me full-blown insomnia but interfered with the sleep I was getting so it wasn't restful so I slept more, maybe?

Yes, that is possible. It is really hard to tell how lightly you are sleeping for how long during the night, but very light sleep, or any sleep stage distortion, is bound to be bad, and may make you more tired so you spend more hours in bed.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving (just past, in Canada), I am pleased to see this reference pop up. What goes around comes around, and I find the information I needed in a thread that I helped create. Gratitude to all, and Kt especially, for making it come to pass.
