Offensive Language Redux

Posted by shar on December 20, 2003, at 23:03:24

Could someone please summarize the offensive language rules/guidelines/regulations? I thought asterisks were ok to use, but then someone got a pbc for using a sentence with a word with an asterisk in it.

Can we use initials? Like gd (for gosh darn) or f'ing (for fricking, which I've heard on regular TV so I assume it's ok here). Or, watered down versions like crap to stand for other words?

Sorry to drag this up again, but I must have misunderstood.

Confused Shar

Are you sure it originally had an asterisk in it? Dr. Bob goes back and puts them in. It makes for a very confusing read afterwards. Perhaps his standard language PBC should contain a statement that he has now *** the offensive word.

No, not sure. It just had one when I saw it. I didn't know Dr. Bob would put them in.

Thanks,
Shar

Respectful language is a better challenge

When I saw how I was not only acting disrespectful to others with expletives, and that I showed low self-respect, bordering on self loathing, it was not a pretty picture.

Jerry Seinfeld said during an interview recently that he believed that comedy without "potty-mouth" was "a better game". He intimated that even if it was real easy to get gigs "talking raunchy", he got much better, longer lasting, better paying jobs, when he kept it clean.

That clinched it for me. I was negotiating a 2 book deal with a self-help publisher. One book was going to be clean, and the other "potty-mouth", both full of the same info. They were just as interested as I was to see the response. Seinfeld's concept clinched it for me not to do it. I would be going public with my low self-respect.

So, now I humbly work on my self-respect.

Where was that? I guess there are two issues, the word itself and how it's used. With asterisks, the word itself is OK.

I asterisk words when I quote them, but I don't edit them into the original posts... That's a good idea regarding my standard response...

Initials are OK. As are "gosh darn" and "fricking" even if spelled out... FYI, there's now a system: words or phrases are problematic if considered often or usually disparaging, obscene, offensive, or vulgar by Merriam-Webster OnLine. And it's easy to check something while you're posting, just paste it into the box and click "check spelling".

Does that help?

See my post in another thread, but sometimes I think to leave the language in, especially when it is the subject line, can be potentially inflammatory. I feel this about the post I referenced in "uncivil subject line"--especially since it specifically calls another poster an offensive name.

hey there ~

merriam-webster's offensive language detection system reminds me of the very similar feature on my eudora6 email program ...

is it feasible for adminstration to automate offensive language detection within the babble server system?

is it exspensive?

if those answers were 'yes', and 'no' ....
then suspect posts could be routed through a subroutine for a programmed standard administrative response ...

... the burden of monitoring all babble posts must be a great enough challenge without the extra load of working as the vocabulary police ... ... lightening the load this small amount might make it easier to focus on subtler issues ...

the vocabulary police serve their purpose ... can we make the machines do the job?

greetings,
~ jim

I've wondered about that. Does Eudora come with a list of uncivil words?

eudora calls this feature "Mood Watch" ...
... and although there must be a list, because it responds like there is a list ... i haven't found it ...

with mood watch turned on, eudora can be set to scan either incoming and or outgoing messages .. .. .. and if my fingers type any potty-mouth words, the letters will turn red and bold ... the message's content gets a rating measured in peppers ...for heat ...

my experience with mood watch has shown that she has language sensitivities very in keeping with pBabble's values ... if not identical ...

see http://www.eudora.com/email/features/moodwatch.html

Well, if you do, or if you find another list, l'd be interested...
