Thinking of studying abroad, Can anyone help?

Posted by The Resistance on May 1, 2005, at 5:38:46

Hi all
I am new to the student board

I live in the UK (for those who don't already know)

I already have an undergraduate degree, in
Philosophy and English joint Honours.

I was thinking of studying abroad in an English speaking country, specificaly Cannada, Australia or the US.
I would either study a postgrad degree or undertake medical training with a view to becoming a psychiatrist.

Does anyone know anything about studying in these countries?
How expensive would it be?
I wouldn't get any funding, and my pairents are not wealthy, so I'd have to fund a lot of it myself.

Hi there!

Good to see another student.

Im not sure I will be much help but I will tell you what little I do know from looking into it years ago.

I have always been under the impression that Medical schools in Canada are very difficult to get into, but coming from another country could be a help...not sure. I think alot of US schools are easier to get into if you are not applying to a top school. So a top school in the US would be harder than Canada but there are so many schools in the US that there are so many other possibilities. Whereas in Canada there is limited space.
As for cost I think it is safe to say you will be spending more if you go to the US but I have always been under the impression that the US gives more finaincial support to students over Canada.
As for Australia I dont know. I could be totally wrong but thats my take on it.

Hope this was of some help :-)

Thanks Rain

I guess I'm not going to study medicine in Cannada if its so competitive!
The US sounds like a better bet

Hello Risistance!

I am kinda in the same boat as you, I'm thinking of studying abroad too and am in the very early stages of planning it...funnily enough I am also wanting to study medicine with a possible view to becoming a psychiatrist, i'm a long way off though but I guess you have to start somewhere.

From what I've managed to research so far, the US and UK are similar in respects to the costs of university, so when you take into account the airfare, conditions of how much $ your need for your study visa etc.. it would make America pretty espensive to study, possibly more so than it would here in the UK. Because of this i've pretty much ruled out the US.

I briefly looked into Canada and that would be cheaper than the UK and US, so that is an option, but like Rain said and I think from what I found out comptition is quite high as to getting accepted..

All in all, I found that New Zealand and Australia seem the best prospects. Firstly they are far cheaper than either here or the US to study and you get alot of Dollars for our pound (roughly double) especially when you combine the fact that the cost of living is cheaper as well as Student fees etc.. Personally at the moment i'm thinking more on New Zealand as don't quote me exactly for this, but I think as for medical insurance, presription costs and doctors fees you may find New Zealand has the edge for us Brits especially if your on a tight budget. Saying that though, I have not definately decided on either New Zealand or Oz yet.

I still have to do alot more research with regards to the Student Visa requirements of New Zealand and Australia. I do however suspect that as well as paying for the Student Fees, it maybe a requirement that you have to be able to show you have enough money to live on each year for living expensives..Again don't quote me on that as I don't know for sure the exact details.

One thing is certain though, overall either NZ or OZ would work out far cheaper in the end compared to the UK.....but you may well need alot of money up front to prove that you can support yourself, so its swings and roundabouts. As soon as I know more i'll update you on the Student Visa Requirements for each country.

I'm 22 years old and unlike you I have no degree. I left school at 16, so i'm way behind and will be applying firstly for a foundation course, with a view to then become an Undergraduate...So you see i'm way behind to say the least!!! Unfortunately I was in no position to gain further education in the past 5 years due to becoming ill, but now im correctly diagnosed and treated I hope I can now go forward with this...

I hope what I have provided it somewhat helpful. Heres a couple of links too:

Ah. I just found this thread. Now the one over on politics is making a little more sense to me...

Heh heh. I'm a philosophy major.
What kind of philosophy are / were you into???
Funnily enough I have been contemplating a change in field over to medicine to become a (you guessed it) psychiatrist myself :-)

Great minds think alike???
Perhaps... Perhaps...

Ok. The exchange rate between NZ and Britian is more like one pound for about three NZ dollars - so it is even better than you thought. About NZ 80c for one Australian dollar - and the cost of living tends to be cheaper than Australia (especially than the big cities).

With respect to medicine in NZ I can help you out a little (after having looked into it myself). There are only 2 uni's in NZ that offer medicine so that makes life a little easier. Auckland - Which is the biggest city in NZ (north island) and Otago which is in Dunedin down the south island and is a real student town! The cost of living in Dunedin is WAY cheaper than Auckland and so I was thinking of heading off there...

It is fairly hard to get into.
They have a graduate admission criteria that you can apply under and it buys you a year off your degree (pre-med basically).

There is usually an interview too - so I don't know how that would work out for you.

Just do a google on "Auckland University" or maybe "University of Auckland" and "Otago University" and check out there med school pages about entry etc etc.

In general international student fees are about 2 or 3 x the fees of residents / citizens. Expensive, yes.

Whereas if you do a PhD on the other hand then you tend to pick up a scholarship to pay fees and a living stipend.

I guess that is what is hard about changing fields...

Med school in Australia works out a little differently. They have this test. GMAT ??? Something like that. Basically you have to study for it and there is a cut off score. Med school is pretty competitive everywhere to the best of my knowledge.

Now... In NZ and Australia (don't know how it is in the UK and Canada) medicine is the only route to psychiatry. I have heard (from my p-doc as a matter of fact) that in the US there is another route.

I don't know what exactly that is...
How hard it is to get into...
Or how expensive that is...

I wanted to go to Australia, but I messed up something with the Registar's office, and got depressed for 2 years basically.

Go to Australia. Do not avoid going abroad. They're friendly people, and not once have I ever asked anyone about the country here in the U.S. that said it was not a splendid country worthy of returning to. I also know to Aussies, and wish to move there someday forever and marry one.

How many countries with a 24 hour flight each way can you say about that?

Hiya, I just came across your post and I'm in New Zealand just finishing my undergrad in psych... I've been looking around for postgrad and it seems that here and oz have the best options! Here are a couple of websites to the psych departments at some universities in Auckland that may be of use... hope this helps!
