Today we celebrate the day that some guy blew up parliament. We dress up dummies as guys and throw them on bonfires and let off fireworks.
Happy guy fawks everyone.

This is celebrated so irresponsibly by some. I live in a neighbourhood that has a ratio of 50 dogs to each household (and the houses are semi detached). I'm considering leaving town tonight if I ever want to sleep. My heart goes out to these poor animals who cannot stop barking because they are terrified. So many dogs run away and are killed on the roads or just get lost. We have even had incidences of fire crackers being used on an animal. I won't go into more detail than that.
My son loves fire crackers, so we always get him a few and then go to the designated areas on our beachfront where animals are not allowed and set them off for him.
And with my hypervigilance at the moment, I shudder to think what my nerves are going to be like by tomorrow.
Sigh

Hi folks
Not sure where you are- I wouldnt expect anyone outside the UK to celebrate this? Wouldnt make a lot of sense, as it was an attempt by a small group of Catholics to blow up the Houses of Parliament (Protestant dominated).
Guy Fawkes and his co-consipirators were discovered at the last minute, in a search of the cellars, and went thru the particularly grisly form of execution used for traitors all that time ago.
In Scotland, Halloween used to be celebrated, but the Guy Fawkes day celebrations have spread there (any excuse for a party!)
It is such a shame about animals (and nervous people). It has been a bit better in England this year as there is a ban on selling fireworks until a few days before 5th Nov (and other celebrations, such as Diwali).

NZ celebrates it too. And I think Australia. What about Canada? - Not sure.
Thanks for telling me about the history of it, I really didn't have a clue :-)
This is the end of the thread.
