Good weight-loss book

Posted by bookgurl99 on May 8, 2003, at 11:39:42

Hey y'all,

i have really struggled with weight gain this year, as i know a lot of us on meds do.

i'm realizing part of the problem is that i was trying to follow a strict 1500 calorie diet, but it was very low fat. i would end up so hungry and unsatiated that i would be good all day and then eat a turtle sundae or box of cereal at night. (and i have to admit there were a few times i ate a whole large pizza alone over 2 days.)

somewhere recently, i stumbled across "The Schwartzbein Principle". This book has an eating plan in which one limits starchy vegetables, fruit, and refined carbs to 15 grams/meal, 7 1/2 grams/snack. There is no limit on non-starchy vegetables. Meanwhile, real fat and healthy fats are used to keep you satiated.

since trying this for a week, i've found that i no longer think about food in between meals. i'm not eating half the box of cereal at night, i'm just satisfied. and my energy level has gone way up.

so, if you have tried a lot of things and just can't lose weight, check it out.

I took a quick look on Amazon and it looks pretty interesting. The author has published a cookbook also. Have you tried any of the recipes?

Hi Bookgurl--

I've just been declared "insulin-resistant", so your book recommendation couldn't have been more timely for me. I've added it to my shopping cart at Amazon, but I wondered if you've read her follow-up book and/or her cookbook? If so, do think that they're worth purchasing as well?

Thanks much for the link!---medlib

Hey,

there are actually 3 books written by this author -- by the way, it's not very well written in terms of applying to yourself. but there are 'sample menus' in the back with a few recipes. i think once you see how to do it, and try a couple of meals, you'll know what you're aiming at.

i'm actually waiting for the cook book to arrive at the bookstore. i figured it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

Thanks for the advice justyourlaugh. :D

At this point, I've accepted my body. Unfortunately, my dr. pointed out this week that I have numerous risk factors for diabetes. (Like, every risk factor but 1.) The only factor that I have control over is my weight and eating choices.

Fear not, I did polish off some ice cream last night. But if I want to live long and healthy, I've gotta make these changes.

Sorry to hear about your insulin resistance. My doctor really likes the high protein, low glycemic index diets like Sugarbusters. But I must confess that I'm not overly enthusiastic.

So far I've managed to lose some weight by not eating the things that are worst for me. But I can't quite bring myself to eat the things that are good for me, so I'm ending up not eating all that much, which isn't good for my diabetes either I suppose.

Did your doctor give you any specific recommendations or suggest a dietician? My husband wants to take my doctor up on a dietician but I don't really see the use. It's not that I don't know what I should and shouldn't eat. I just can't bring myself to follow through. Not eating at all, or eating just one meal a day and a couple of snacks, seems less unappealing.
