How do you all tell your T about Babble? GG?

Posted by Jazzed on June 26, 2005, at 11:12:51

I've been really curious, I know some of you have told your T's about Babble. How did you tell them that you're involved in an online forum like this? What was their response?

I'd get so paranoid that they'd be reading my stuff, and that would freak me out. Do any of you feel that way? Of course, I know that's unrealistic, that they probably don't have the time, and maybe not the interest, BUT ppl like GG are here, and she's going to be a T.

GG will you hang out here when you're a T, and will you ever wonder if any of the ppl are your clients? Would you tell them if you thought you were reading their posts? Stranger things could happen than T's reading this stuff I guess.

I'd like to bounce it off my T, and get his take, but then I'm afraid to. Any ideas?

When I was seeing a T, I told her in one of the first sessions that I'd found some supportive & fun on-line forums and that I planned to post regularly. She thought that sounded cool and good and didn't ask too many questions. I think I even told her it was Babble, and said she shoudl check it out b/c it was so cool! I don't know if she did, though.

But I made it very clear that this was something I do, and that nothing I do is up for debate or messing with. I was probably a very difficult client! So firm with my own ideas. :) But she did coax me into trying a new job, and into putting resumes out there, and I appreciated that. So she did help me branch out.

It depends on if you want them to know about you fully. Also to run into the risk of losing this private space and support if you ever want to process if a bad thing happened with your T. You might be more concerned to be in your T's good books than to really process what happened.

But I have told both my ex T and my current T about this site, and still feel free to criticize their actions here. I really don't mind them reading here.. since my purpose with a T is to be 100 % honest with them anyway, and that includes my view of them. I figured I got to gain more by telling them about this, than I have to lose. Even if I have to one day really want some private space and don't want them to read, I have got other discussion boards which I can choose to participate which they may not read.

That is my take on it anway.

Oh, I would NOT ever mention it by name! I wouldn't want to even chance that I was being read. I'd quit posting in a heartbeat, and never post again. BUT, I'd like to know what he thinks about this type of forum.

Hey Jazzy!
I sort of brought up the subject on our last session. I asked him if he came accross anything he thought was me. I guess I am just paronoid about him finding my post here. He told he wants to talk about this another time to find out what I am saying that I don't want him to read about! lol

Hi,
I already see clients, so I suppose there is a chance that I could run into one here. Or that one could recognize me.

I never told my T the name of this site. At least not intentionally. I don't trust his curiousity to win out over his boundaries. He would probalby not read here if I asked him not to, but better not to spill, eh?

I have no plans to stop coming here once I get licensed, as long as I still have time. I don't recommend this site to my clients, though, just to avoid running into one here. I don't know what I would do if I thougth I was reading one of my clients. I might Babblemail them and check it out. And then we would have to agree to some kind of way of dealing with it. Sure would be odd, though.

I printed out a post I wanted to share with him, but before I did I made him promise (ie he actually had to say "I promise that...") that he'd never ever look on this site and never ever ask someone else to look there for him. And he knows not to lie to me, so it was a real promise.

Ooo, that could be awkward! Wonder if I'd recognize my T. Doubt it, don't know him well enough yet.

LOL, now that would be even more awkward if he did happen to find you here. No, I know I wouldn't tell if it were me.

Good that you have that kind of trust between the two of you Littleone. That's a good feeling.

I haven't told him much yet. His first impression it was a rating site, where you can rate your doctor. He had a patient do this. I am not sure how PC savey he is. But now that his curiosity is stirred up, I hope he wasn't looking for me on his vacation. lol I am sure both you and me will be put in time out! lol I don't plan on telling him the name of the site.

I ended up telling my pdoc at our last session. Almost a year ago now something strange (more on that in a bit) happened, and I hadn't really been able to share my emotional reaction with him when I told him, so he asked me if I could tell him now that there's a good deal of distance from the situation. I told him I didn't remember too well, but I had posted about it on a message board and would send him the link later.

After seeing the overly eager expression on his face when I mentioned this board, I'm not so sure I trust him not to go running off looking into everything. I'll probably still send him the link when the time comes, though. (He's on vacation this week, then I'm away for several weeks, during which he agreed to keep in touch by e-mail.)

Of course, I don't really have an excuse for not giving him the link, seeing as the incident I referred to earlier came about when I stumbled across him talking about me on a board which was supposed to be private but wasn't. So I suppose he's entitled to a little revenge. ;) Not that I've posted here much lately, so there isn't too much for him to dig up.

Why don't you just cut and paste the post itself to an email, so he doesn't have the board info. Then, if he asks any more about the board, you'll know just how interested he is. I'd never give the link, unless I wanted someone to read my stuff, which I don't.

Nice to meet you too. :) It was actually a web-site for those who had been to a specific set of conferences (don't remember which at the moment), so it wasn't a huge board or anything. When I stumbled across it, maybe 10 people were posting there. Unfortunately once it came out that it was publically viewable, the webmaster was informed and that all changed... no fair!

How did you know it was your T posting? Did he use his real name?

I don't know how I hadn't thought of that before. I might do that instead. I haven't posted anything too embarassing (with one exception but he knows about the contents of that post), it's more the way in which I did it, which may be good for him to see anyway. I'll have to think about it some more; it's a week before I can e-mail him, anyway, so that should be plenty of time to think it over.

He used his real name, as well as giving the city he's from. Everybody did on that board because of the setting; and in any event I told him at our next session and he confirmed it.

Most of my crises used to come from Babble, so of course it had to be a topic of discussion. It's still a major topic of discussion. Not only board dynamics, but also ideas etc, that I get here.

He likes what he's heard of Babble, said that he learned a lot from me about internet relationships when I went to Chicago.

But he's promised never to peek and I trust him.

Well, I've decided I won't tell him about it at all. I'm just not comfortable with it. Maybe some time down the road, but this road might be short.
