We're talking about how to get it, but what is it?
To me, it means our valuation of ourselves. I don't know that that's quite all of it, though, and I know I have trouble with the part about "self-esteem that is not tied to accomplishments or attributes." That last part, I really don't get at all -- how can I value myself if I haven't done anything and don't have any attributes? And yet, I'm told that self-esteem shouldn't be tied to those things...
Anyway, I'm interested to see what others have to say.

I like this definition, courtesy of Curt.

Especially the part by Branden.
I think I like it because it reconciles my dilemma of thinking that self esteem shouldn't be based on accomplishments, while recognizing that in fact it usually does increase with a sense of mastery of one's environment. By breaking it down into two components, that tension is removed.

Maybe it should read "not tied to *particular* accomplishments or attributs"
Everyone has accomplishments and everyone has good attributes. Its just that those of us with low self-esteem don't think our own accomplishments are worthy. While, oddly, the same thing in someone else would be admirable.
I read somewhere that happiness isn't having what you want. It's wanting what you have.
Maybe that applies to our qualities too, not just material things.

You do have self-esteem and attributes. You deny them or you are discontent with the "amount" you have. To me self esteem is not an amount. It is just there or it isn't. Too many people want more when they really have enough (I do). I know accepting that is the hard part, but not denying it IS accepting it.

I'm sorry to say Racer that I feel like you do. I only felt worthy while working. Now that I'm not I don't feel like I'm worthy of anything. Bad me. Love Phillipa
