I don't know that that's quite all of it, though, and I know I have trouble with the part about "self-esteem that is not tied to accomplishments or attributes." That last part, I really don't get at all -- how can I value myself if I haven't done anything and don't have any attributes? And yet, I'm told that self-esteem shouldn't be tied to those things...

You do have self-esteem and attributes. You deny them or you are discontent with the "amount" you have. To me self esteem is not an amount. It is just there or it isn't. Too many people want more when they really have enough (I do). I know accepting that is the hard part, but not denying it IS accepting it.
