I was diagnosed with ptroluria in 2000.Kryptopyrole was 200.I got testing done with vitamin diognostics lab. I was told by the doctor not to combine b6 and zinc with this condition because they form a compound and are depleted from the body. My symptoms were so much worse combining them. I now take b complex and zinc 10 hrs apart. I can not tolerate p5p it makes my ocd alot worse. I am doing good now as long as I keep the two supplements apart.Has anyone else been told this? My histamine is low so I don't know if I can take manganese because it lowers histamine. Does anyone know? My Doctor retired and I have not found a good one yet.

Jeaner,
Hello, and welcome to Psycho-Babble. It's good to know that vitamin B6 and zinc should not be taken at the same time because they could form a compound and thus be depleted from the body. I was not aware of this, but I did know that patients with pyroluria are typically advised to take zinc and vitamin B6. How are the B complex and zinc supplements working out for you?

Jeaner,
I'm glad to hear that the supplements you're taking are working out for you.
I have not been tested for pyroluria, although I have taken zinc and vitamin B6. The zinc reduced the severity of my depressive symptoms somewhat on the first day that I took it, but seemed to lose its effectiveness after that. I found B6 to be mildly helpful at controlling my lithium-induced agitation when I took it previously, but otherwise, I didn't notice much from the supplement.

I went to a doctor who tested alot of his patients for this. His son had it and had schizophrenia so he took an interest in the disorder. His son is healed now with supplements and is a doctor himself.A veterinarian .Thanks for asking

I have schizophrenia, and I find that certain supplements do help. B6 and zinc are two which really help me, but I have not heard that you have to take them 10 hours apart. I seem to do okay taking them a couple hours apart at most. I was taking manganese for awhile, and it seemed to help my anxiety, but I stopped taking it after a few months. Maybe I just needed it for a little while. I still take zinc (picolinate form), which seems to really help with depression. B6 helps with my depression and anxiety issues. It is said that a certain percentage of schizophrenics do suffer from pyroluria, and I feel I may be in this category for sure. However, there are other vitamins that are just as important, such as vitamins E and C, selenium, B1, B12, and fatty acids. It seems I am not strictly deficient in just zinc and B6. So someone may be pyroluric, but there may also be issues with methylation status and antioxidant status as well, and also a deficiency in certain fatty acids, namely omega-3s and omega-6s.
Thanks for your posts.Lao

Hi Jeaner,
I looked it up and it had a self-diagnosis questionnaire which I seemed to score quite highly in possibly meaning that I may have this. What is the dosage of each supplement do you take and at what times if I may ask too? I'm very interested in the (potential) quick results from the supplement taking (I read you can feel better within 72 hours!).
All the best,
Chan Fook.

I take 200mg of b 6 in a b complex form . 100 in am and 100 at lunch. I take zinc in the evening before bed.I eat a little something just to help my stomic. Zinc can upset it. The doc had me take 2 of my 22.5 mg zinc. I now take an extra 10mg in with another supplement because I tested low.I use a whole food form of zinc. The b complex is a whole food but has some synthetic in it to get such high doses. I also get some in my multi but very little.

Hi, I should have said that everyone is different and you should talk to a doc before you take what might not be right for you. Kryptopyrrole testing is not very exspensive. Vitamin diagnostics phone # is 732-583-7774. I have called them before to find a doc that tests with them. I read somewhere you don't have to use a doctor, just send in a frozen urine sample to the lab.

Maybe I will approach my doctor but he is very skeptical about giving me tests (I'm from the UK, so we have 'free' health care) because he doesn't see a problem. I don't know maybe I need to change but the whole local practice is full of covering-up doctors that just want to kick you out as soon as possible.
A friend gave me some USANA branded chelated minerals and mega antioxidants with the B-complex and also zinc too. I'll try them out on the schedule you provided and I'll see (and hope) to see some improvement!
All the best and thanks for the knowledge,
Chan Fook.

So far I've been doing well on 200mg of B6 per day and 44mg of zinc picolinate. Yet I think some people that have pyroluria may have other nutrient deficiencies as well. I've noticed that I seem to do better on the zinc and B6 if I also take fatty acids, B12, selenium, C and E, and B1. I know it is not always easy to determine what your reaction to various vitamins will be. You can actually use them like drugs if you know what you are doing, but it takes a lot of practice to learn how much you need of each vitamin and the benefit of taking them at different times of day instead of all at once. I think most doctors wouldn't even try to tinker with large doses of vitamins, but in my opinion, there are benefits to using the vitamins correctly. Unfortunately, there isn't anyone watching your progress when you experiment with vitamins, and I know firsthand how frustrating it can be when you feel you aren't getting a good response. It really takes time for your body to utilize the vitamins, and your body will become conditioned to a specific regimen you choose for yourself. All I can say is have patience and do your research. There actually is some good information on the web about what vitamins are the most important for depression. Sometimes you will feel that a certain vitamin is not for you or it does not improve the symptoms. Personally, I look at the three categories: Overmethylation, Undermethylation, and Pyroluria. You may fit into one category strictly, or you may find that you need very specific supplements from all three categories possibly. In my case, this is true. I really don't think that I am strictly pyroluric. I am sure that on your journey to wellness, you will discover many supplements that do absolutely nothing for your symptoms and even can make matters worse. I advise caution in paying too much attention to the internet because really, there is no one supplement that will cure all your symptoms. It's a matter of trial and error with various vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids and getting the dosages right for your individual body. Sometimes, there will be a general dosage range that you can work with, but I haven't found any good information as to specific dosages that are optimal for any one person. I always say start on the low side and work up to an optimal dosage with each and every vitamin. That's what I've been working on, and it has paid off to some degree. I gave up on multivitamins because the dosages are usually too low to cause any beneficial changes. I think with someone who has severe depression, you have to work with a number of individual vitamins instead of a multiple. Multivitamins I believe are suboptimal for people with depression. I don't think you can customize a multivitamin for everyone's needs so I think there's a lot of false advertising out there. Be careful what you choose to take to heart.
