GLA content of some common foods...

Posted by LOOPS on September 7, 2007, at 8:29:19

Hello everybody -

I was surprised to find the famous GLA or gamma-linoleic acid that many people supplement is actually fairly common in foods - see this

http://www.nutritiondata.com/foods-000058000000000000000-w.html

Interesting huh? After all the fuss about this fatty acid being only available in decent amounts in evening primrose/borage oil etc - turns out eating peanuts and avocados will get you a helping as well - also beef. Actually I assume the foods listed are the only ones they TESTED for that fatty acid - most other foods just have a '~' which means they DON'T KNOW.

Hey!

I love nutritiondata. How'd you do that search thing?

Thing is, how realistic is it that you eat 100g of peanuts? Prolly not that much. Avocardos, yes, but not peanuts. Anyway it just goes to show!

Hi Meri -

I just went into tools and there is a function there to find nutrients in foods.

Well the funny thing is I sometimes do eat 100g of peanuts - I'm on a high fat low carb diet for the past couple of years, and to be honest, this with magnesium supplementation has totally cleared up my acne/eczema. My skin has really improved, as have my sleep and mental problems.

Yeah that site is great, although sometimes there is a lot of information still missing on various foods - like the animal form of vitamin K for example - I think they just measure the plant form, so many animal products come out looking like they don't have any K in the fat, when they do (bacon for example).

Not to knock on plant foods - I eat those too.

Hey!

Wow, thats great news about your skin, and other things. So, what do you think has helped your skin the most? I've been reading reports that low GI stuff really helps acne etc. Which would make sense, but was it also the magnesium?? Hmm.

I personally could never do those low carb things - what do you eat every day? I just don't get them, and I'm not entirely sure they're good for your kidneys. But low GI is a very good idea.

Anyway, yes, nutritiondata does lack certain things, and I find it abit frustrating because I live in europe and obviously alot of the things are totally based on american foodstuffs, and what I would call staples don't really feature that much. Like hummous and things like that.

Anyway.

I'm not sure that even this is true, but some say very high protein diets are bad for the kidneys.

Personally I prefer a very high fat approach so my protein intake is pretty much normal or the same as what I ate before - it seems to suit me much better and my blood sugar levels are extremely steady now.

I think I had a lot of food sensitivities to various fruits, grains, legumes - a lot of the plant world but I never had a problem with animal products. I also had various eating disorders which have also totally cleared up - mainly because I no longer fret about weight gain or have to restrict my calories to keep to a normal weight.

Not to rant on about it or anything, but the first month was a little draining as I wasn't used to burning fat for energy, but after that I felt completely normal. As far as sport is concerned, the first YEAR I wasn't up to my performance levels prior, but then this got so much better as well in the end. Now I'm stronger than before.

So for me, the usual 'eat low-fat and lots of fruits and veggies' really doesn't apply. My sister also has problems with food sensitivities but she is scared of doing what I do.

My favourite foods are cream, nuts and broccoli. You would think with having prior eczema that cream or cheese would upset my system, but it doesn't. I don't drink milk because it has too much lactose. Maybe it is the sugar not the dairy.

Usually I get up drink tea with cream, breakfast is eggs cooked in butter/lard, later on some yerba mate maybe, lunch and dinner is some kind of vegetable (spinach is good) with natural fat (butter/lard etc) and a little meat or fish. Snacks are nuts and cheese or low-carb veggies with a homemade dip.

It's really simple and it works for me! I never go hungry and it just feels right.

Happy camping
