Almonds just give me a great sense of peace, and some increased focus also.I used to think it was the magnesium. But I've tried various magnesium supplements and they don't work nearly as well. And they give me orthostatic hypotension, which I never get with almonds.
And you could also say it's the omega 3's. But I already take high dose omega 3's. And the response to almonds is rather fast, like within 24 hours. I just have to eat a lot. Like probably two large fistfuls (and probably like 600+ calories, but I'm skinny so that's fine).
No complaints, just curious why almonds work so well.
Can anyone else relate or offer an explanation?

One other question on the topic of almonds, if anyone might know the answer: If almonds are so high in fiber, how is it that the (good) fats in them are so well absorbed (presumably)?Thanks...Peace...Saturn

i don't know. i've always found nuts to be energizing. i thought maybe it had something to do with high monounsaturated fat levels. similar to the effect of taking a shot of olive oil...but i don't know...

I don't know, Saturn- but I swear a shake I often make boosts or at leasts supports my mood:Blend frozen blueberries with almond milk, sometimes some fresh sliced ginger, sometimes some organic yogurt which is chock full-o-bacterias, biotics, whatever they are.

Hmmmm, now this is an interesting thread!
I've gone through a really bad patch over xmas and new year but since I quit my sups regime I seem to have improved sharply (this seems to happen often)
I seem to be on a bit of a downward slide right now but my body seems to be doing a good job of just holding the bad spell away. Odd given I'm now taking nothing!
The one thing I am 'taking' though is maybe 10 to 12 walnuts each day. They do tend to make me go to the loo a bit, but I love em! I wonder if they are helping me in some way?
I do have enough almonds for a large handful each day for about a week but need some new nut crackers before I try and replicate saturns results.

and oxidation stuff too.. so good for ya
don't know almonds I'd be careful about pigging' out on.. cyanide? and all that.. but good for a couple a day though
I had a stack of bags of walnuts but they are all gone
they gave them away at the end of an omega3 study or something?at uni..they always seem todo a lot of those
I shoulda grabbed a lot more only I didnt realise I like them :)

Well, I sure hope almonds don't contain cyanide...I get through quite alot at times! Actually last week I bought 100g and it lasted about 24hrs. Anwyay. I thought that only animal derived products contain omega 3 and that plant sources it was um, AHA or something that was the precurser to omega 3, and then the body converted it?
Anyway here's some data on almonds -- I hope it works!

There are various fruit seeds that might contain cyanide. What about apple seeds? I eat the cores and the seeds have a pleasantly almondy taste that might be cynide. Never tried aprcot or peach seeds. I have a friend who eats papaya/paw paw seeds. Tastes like nasturtium.

I honestly don't know where this poisoning myself thing comes from. I used to eat apples whole too - although I'd never crush the pips, too bitter. When I was a kid I used to eat all kinds of things that I somehow knew where 'safe' -like Hawthorn leaves (!), elderberries (which are actually poisonous when raw apparently - goes to show doesn't it?) sweet peas, rose petals, these little funny plants at the bottom of our garden......even when we were roughing it out and camping rough and hiking in Iceland, we were so hungry once we pulled up some roots of an unknown plant and started eating them..... look how I've changed! I think I used to even eat the soft pips in apricots and peaches, I remember distinctly splitting the stone open and thinking how nice the inside seed was. I used to even shallow plum stones whole. Man, I certainly have changed alot!!!!! Sigh.

I later found 6 almonds a day long term to be a bit too much and cut them out completely.. BUt I think a couple a day would be beneficial :) I mean over months or more likely a couple of years.
Greens have lotsa omega-3 too.. posted on that before somewhere a few times.
These are the sorts of omega 3's I tolerate with NO nasty side effects :-)
I haven't checked but maybe the greens haven't got as much of the 22 long omega 3(like DHA) and mor of the 20 (EPA).. memory again ..

Growing up in Queensland nurtured hopes that New South Wales would be better.

Cyanide in almonds? Toxic pits?Interesting to know, that the Native Americans who used to live in what is now California ate a lot of acorns as a dietary staple- toxic. If I remember correctly from gradeschool, they developed a process of mashing them up and washing them extensively to remove the toxin. There must be some more specific info somewhere on the internet- wikipedia maybe?-about this. The only part I don't get is didn't they then wash away lots of nutrients, too?
So Declan, perhaps there is a safer way for you to eat apple seeds, peach pits, and other irresistable strange plant parts :)

That's interesting. My sister-in-law says the same thing about this real high quality almond lotion she has. She says the smell of it is the only thing that brings her peace.

Sorry for the delay in this response, but I wanted to weigh in on your interesting question.
I would suggest that the positive benefits you get from almonds might be from the particular combination of nutrients found in them. Magnesium is plentiful --- but so is calcium and zinc. The body utilizes these nutrients in a synergistic fashion and taking these minerals together can supposedly increase their bioavailability.
A healthy calcium/magnesium balance in the body can help a variety of ailments, including circulation problems, muscle cramps and pms/menstrual cramps. It sounds terribly simplistic, but after taking a cal/mag supplement for at least a month, my longterm problem with severe menstrual cramps was totally eliminated. I wouldn't even have believed it was worth trying, but received the suggestion from female physician and figured it couldn't hurt.
Pardon my digression, but I think it is amazing that simply taking the right combination of minerals can completely eliminate a once disabling condition. I wouldn't be surprised if the same protocol could be used for other similar conditions such as migraines. I'd be interested in hearing the experiences of others.

I just read somewhere that they are loaded with Tyrosine a precursor to Dopamine and Norepinephrine. You might try to supplement that.

There's a saying that mineral deficiencies are the root of all illness/vitamin deficiencies - or that all illnesses can be traced back to a mineral deficiency. I think that's probably true.
Nuts aren't high in omega 3 but in omega 6, and although they contain a little zinc, they have a high copper to zinc ratio. They are also rich in B2 which is important for the function of active B6 (I think that's right anyway from what I remember).
Are you low in copper? Do you focus mostly on eating fish etc and do you take a multi which is high in zinc and low or no copper? Because personally I find that I do actually need omega 6 and copper after years of focusing on omega 3 and zinc.
I would keep taking the almonds - sounds like a winner anyway.
