Sorry for the delay in this response, but I wanted to weigh in on your interesting question.
I would suggest that the positive benefits you get from almonds might be from the particular combination of nutrients found in them. Magnesium is plentiful --- but so is calcium and zinc. The body utilizes these nutrients in a synergistic fashion and taking these minerals together can supposedly increase their bioavailability.
A healthy calcium/magnesium balance in the body can help a variety of ailments, including circulation problems, muscle cramps and pms/menstrual cramps. It sounds terribly simplistic, but after taking a cal/mag supplement for at least a month, my longterm problem with severe menstrual cramps was totally eliminated. I wouldn't even have believed it was worth trying, but received the suggestion from female physician and figured it couldn't hurt.
Pardon my digression, but I think it is amazing that simply taking the right combination of minerals can completely eliminate a once disabling condition. I wouldn't be surprised if the same protocol could be used for other similar conditions such as migraines. I'd be interested in hearing the experiences of others.
