I'd be interested to know if acupuncture has helped anyone here with anxiety or depression.

I have a friend who is getting it now for neck pain and it's helping a lot.

I've always wondered if it really works.

I had a quick skip through that site you recommended.......its the usual drugs work and nothing else does tosh and I recommend people dont even waste their time reading it!!

Treatments whether conventional or alternative (a dubious description in itself!!) work for some people and not for others. If it works for an individual then that individual has found a cure for their individual ailment........it really is THAT simple.

I agree about the Skeptic Dict. Critical thinking and examining the evidence is good, but in the end if something works, then it works.

I saw a science program many years ago where they used acupuncture in this Chinese surgery for anesthsia. My aunt, who suffered from the effects of polio, said it was the only thing that helped her with pain.

I haven't heard anything about acupuncture and depression though. I suspect you'd have to have a really good practitioner who was experienced with the psyche angle.

Thanks. I'm trying an acupuncturist tonight, but I'm not sure if they really know about depression so I'll see how it goes.

I cannot stop going on about how wonderful acupuncture is for depression/anxiety! I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and was ignored by both my GP and endocrinologist about the massive depression issues I was having. A friend recommended acupuncture and during the first session it was like someone had switched a light on inside me and a horrible weight lifted. People noticed the difference just by looking at me - and noone known I'd just had treatment either - and also some of these people didn't even know I was depressed in the first place.

I can't say for sure whether it would work for everyone - especially those whose depression comes from a different source than mine - but it is definitely worth trying. And for the reference, my acupuncturist started treatment on my feet and legs for the depression issues.

Hope this helps.

I've been doing accupuncture for three months for anxiety/depression and hormone problems and it hasn't been helping much at all. :(

Maybe Accupuncture is not Intense enough for your body/brain to produce some sort of anti-depressant response. For the last month I have been consuming Habanero peppers and also hot sauce with pure capsaicin crystals approx three days week. This produces INCREDIBLE pain that you are forced to endure until your body starts pumping out endorphins. You also learn how to take control of your mind and focus/meditate to conquer the pain. Anyways, this has greatly helped augment my adderall and I feel alot more resilient to stress and pain. Read my post below to learn more.

Acupuncture works for anxiety and depression.

I have seen two acupuncturists. The first practiced Japanese Acupuncture. To be honest, I didn't see much benefit despite having had many treatments with him. In retrospect, after seeing how my current acupuncturist works, he didn't seem consistent in his treatment.

I now see an acupunturist who practicies both Japanese and Chinese styles. He has 26 years of experience and is very consistent in his treatment.

He uses an electrical stimulation device on my ears and then puts needles in my legs (below the knees) and arms. Sometimes he puts a single needle in my forehead. None of this is painful. A slight stick and then nothing. Maybe a very dull ache. You can't feel them after they're in.

I don't usually feel anything from it in terms of anxiety reduction or depression until that evening and the next day. Let me tell you though, the first time I was awestruck! Things just lifted so suddenly I was amazed! I didn't think itcould be the acupuncture..I thought I had a spontaneous improvement. Anyway, it lasted about 2 days the first time and that was a couple of weeks ago. My treatment was interrupted so I'm still at about the same level.

Traditional Chinese medicine is best done as a combination of Acupuncture and herbs for best effect. It has been stuidied and found to be as, if not more effective, than synthetics. It is a very adaptable and tailorable treatment.

I just started taking herbs again a few days ago to augment the acupuncture. This is my second run as I experienced an interruption (wish I hadn't but that the way things go). The first time I felt improvement and was just starting to see pronounced gains when I ran out due to this interruption. This go 'round things are uncertain but I'm continuing with them for a while longer.

They are gentler on your body than synthetics so they are a logical place to start. I can always scale up to synthetics if I get an unsatisfactory response. For the record, I had tried Paxil and Effexor and both made me considerably worse.

There are thousands of herbs in the chinese pharmacopea so I am confident that something will work for me if what I'm taking doesn't.

At present I am taking a product called "Modified Eleven Flavors Warm the Gallbladder" manufactured by Blue Poppy Enterprises. They are only available to acupuncturists and chinese herbalists. You can listen to an audio description (it IS confusing the way they view the body) and read about its use here.

http://www.bluepoppy.com/

In addition to the herbs, they have tons of reserch materials that attest to the effectiveness of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and favorably compares TCM to western treatments.

Note: both sites were down when I composed this but keep trying. The studies are well worth reading.

Hope this has helped someone!

May the grace of God and Jesus be upon each of you as you navigate to eventual healing.

David
