Omega 3 questions

Posted by snapper on April 4, 2005, at 16:20:16

I just got some Carlson's fish oil and it says to take 1 to 2 tsp per day w/meals. I was just wondering if someone could tell me how long it will take to notice if it is doing anything for me?
TIA

Hello Snapper -

what are you taking it for? If you are taking it for anxiety/depression/bipolar you will probably need to take more/a lot more than is recommended.

I take at least 3.6g of actual omega-3 a day, sometimes more.

Hi Loops, thanks for responding.... Yes I am taking it for those conditions.... 'soft' BPII co-morbid OCD GAD w/atypical mixed features. My pdoc actually recc. this instead of adding another med which I think is pretty amazing. He must be doing his 'homework' but he initially recc. that I take 600 to 1000 mg per day. My memory, thinking and cognition are terrible and he said to give this along w/a good multi-vitamin as a first try. Why would he only recc. 600-1000 mg per day. On the side of the bottle it says 1tsp-,= to 5ml,which is 1600mg of EPA, DHA & other Omega oils. Any more input that you or anyone else could provide would be great!
BTW I am very TRD and my symptoms very a lot!
Thanks
Snapper
p.s. right now only 300Mg Effexor xr qd and 15mg diazepam hs
Functioning but nothing you would consider as truly enjoying any kind of life!!
Thanks again for any input

Hi Snapper -

I don't know why he would only recommend that amount, especially if you are mild BP. If you want to find out more than just my word on this, read that Andrew Stoll book on Omega-3 - it explains all the different case scenarios for fish oil use and recommends different dosages. However, even he recommends 1.5-4g pure EPA per day as a starting point for mood regulation.

It seems to be a bit of a grey area who responds to what quantity. The famous bipolar study using fish oil used nearly 10g (6.2g EPA) per day, and some people may need this amount (or even more!).

However there are also studies and anecdotal reports where people have found relief, more specifically from depression from much lower dosages.

Also, not everybody responds desirably - very occasionally fish oil will make somebody more depressed or make them more manic - I have heard this very rarely, but some people don't do well on it. That might be another reason he's starting you off on a low amount. You can always increase the dose or drop it.

I will just add that I've swapped to a pill that has 400mg EPA and only 200mg DHA and am again doing pretty well on this. However, I just ran out of it!!! The remaining bottles I have are 360 EPA and 240 DHA and I have to use them up.

Some people report feeling diffently the same day. Most do not, though. Most people just gradually feel more resilient, less reactive (in the sense of being triggered easily), kind of "smoother", if I can just use a broad term.

Two teaspoons a day is a good maintenance dose, but you can certainly take more, if you tolerate it.

Always take it just after a meal. Best is after your biggest meal of the day. If the meal contains other fats, all the better.

Let us know how it goes, okay?

thanks for the info.... I have been taking 1tsp per day and have been tolerating it pretty well! No fish burps or anything like that. I will probably bump it up to 2tsp per day this week!
Thanks again

Snake oil. But who knows. Maybe they are on to something, but it isn't based on published science.
