I was reading the thread on here where you were helping Dr. Bob with his server problems and you were giving him information about "pings" (whatever that is! Don't worry, I really don't want to know) and other high-tech sounding computer info.
This leads me to conclude that not only are you a fountain of knowledge on biology, anatomy, meds, the psychiatric stuff from the other board, but you are also a computer genius!
I understand that you acquire your psychiatric-related knowledge from extensive research (and are you the one who took bio and chemistry courses in college?), but now I'm wondering:
HOW, WHERE have you learned the detailed, technical things you know about computers, such as the tracert techniques, etc.?
And did you do the tracert resuls using an online site and then copy/paste the results to Dr. Bob on here?
If you went through DOS to do the tracert, how did you manage to get the results printed on here?
Thanks!

Janelle, I only 'seem' to know so much 'cause I've had 52 years to acquire the info & 'cause I know a bunch on many different subjects. I'm an information freak. I can't stand not understanding how something works. If it interests me at all (& most things do), I'll research it & really dig. But that doesn't mean I retain what I learn. Unfortunately, a lot of it slips away.
An example is math. I love playing with algebra & enjoyed learning calculus (but not the endless pages of hand-written problems). But how often does a person use it? I've forgotten most of it. I know algebra wouldn't be too hard to pick up again but I'll never do anything with it.
When I'm interested in computer-related stuff, I ask my son, who's a programmer, & he explains it in detail that I'll understand. I have a basic knowledge of computers - I took a semester of computer courses before I realised I didn't want to work in that field. To others around my age, especially women, I seem like a genius to them, but I *honestly* know so little of what there is to know about them. I'm still baffled about many things in computers.
What I'm very good with is looking at something & figuring out how to do something. I'm actually good with innovative & creative ideas, but it hasn't been much use for me finding work in that area.
When I say, I forget things so easily, I'm not exagerrating. I lose focus when someone's talking easily too. I'm very visually oriented so if something else interesting (like a bird, bug, or almost anything) goes by, my mind follows it. I can also be following an idea through for me & mid-way, it'll slip away, never to return. It's ADD that does it for me. Frustrating doesn't begin to describe it!

Thanks for your reply. I had asked you some questions about how you provided Dr. Bob with the "ping" and tracert info in my original post right above. Could you please go back there and answer them? Thanks, and I still think you are a GENIUS on two fronts that I know of - the whole biology/med front and on the computer front! :-)

I'll answer either tomorrow or the next day, okay? Too tired right now & tomorrow I'll be at work, so more likely on Friday.
What you really need to ask me are questions about plants & gardening. I'll take full credit for horticultural genius - been gardening & learning the science behind plants, soils, bugs, etc for 30 years. :-)

Geez, now I find out that you are a HORTICULTURE genius (sorry, but I have no interest in that stuff) -- I think my tally should be up to about FIVE very different areas of expertise you have, ranging from neurobiology to tea to horticulture to computers and there's one more I'm forgetting now!
Okay, I'll wait patiently for you to answer my computer questions in this thread (the ones about pings, tracert, DOS, etc.)
THANKS! :-)

Janelle, to do tracer-routes & pint times, go to your start menu & select Programs. Then when the sub-menu under Programs opens, select Accesories. When that sub-menu opens, select Command Prompt. Clicking on Command Prompt will open a small window. Where you see the cursor flashing, type in "tracert www.dr-bob.org" (but without the quotation marks & DON'T use http:// - it'll cause problems if you do).
For ping time, same thing except you type in "ping www.dr-bob.org" (no quotation marks of course either). To copy it, select around the whole thing (it's selects kind of funny) & then just a right click alone will copy it to paste somewhere else.
We use Windows 2000. Your OS may not have that. I can't remember if Windows 98 or Windows ME has it. Windows XP Professional will have it - I'm not sure if Windows XP Home would.
Out of curiousity, why would you need to know? Even I didn't know how to find it originally, but because Dr. Bob asked if anyone could help out, I asked my son. He's a programmer but knows all-round computer stuff. To say he's a genius is really an understatement. I've gathered lots of computer knowledge from reading & that semester of computer courses I took. But there's SO VERY MUCH that I can't keep up (it's constantly changing & being added on to). Anything extra, I go to my own computer oracle, my son. Mind you, I can weave circles around him on any biology subject. We keep each other up to date on many different science & math subjects.
This is the end of the thread.
