Dr. Bob,I'm getting really tired of late of certain
people ruining the integrety of the newsgroup.I think that in general people are really good
at sharing that experiences where appropriate
and acknowledging that what their experience is
a small sample of the general population that
will not always apply to those they are giving
advice too.Other people on the other hand, while trying to
be well intended, are very opinionated, and are
being very persuasive at swaying people away from
what probably is the statistically best suited
direction for them recommended by professionally
trained psychiatrists. Many of these people are
juvenile and base there opinions on crude information
posted on the internet.I am really about to loose my cool in regards to
being "civil" as I know as an experienced patient
that the people being influenced by these misinformed
people may be wasting there time and delaying the
likelihood of recieving treatment most likely to
address their issues first shot.Frankly young kids cruising the net shouldn't
be telling other people that their medicine is
junk. Even if they are well intentioned.I owe a lot to pbabble. When I was at my rock bottom
someone on this newgroup took his personal time to
address to help my dispair and set me along the
right direction and this was a major turning
point in my treatment. I want to return the favor
to all these wonderful people who deserve to be
happy. But I just get so STEAMED by these people
who post one sided view points of medicines and
spoil the integrity of the news group.Arghhh.

I know this post is intended for Dr. Bob, but I hope you don't mind my putting my 2 cents in.Please don't lose your cool. Your posts are useful to many people and it's not necessary to be uncivil to get your point across. The best way to counter the influence of incorrect information is to give correct information and question the source of the bad information.
I wish I had the capability, because I do understand your frustration, but my knowledge of medication is small and any information I gave out would be of poor quality.
I do know the board derives its usefulness in large part from knowledgeable posters who do wish to be helpful to those who need it. And from what I've seen you have been one of those posters.
Best wishes and thank you.

Second, it's hard really to know how persuaded people are and what the outcome of that is. Many people here do give a lot of thought to whom to trust:

That's right, let that frustration out! :-)

Hi Zo,I'm sorry you pissed me off once when I was
in the "heated battle" with a nameless person.
Now that I have returned to earth,
I laugh in retrospect and probably deserved your light
hearted comment.I always get a good chuckle every now and then
with your posts.best,

AMEN!!
John,
I just now wandered over here to admin. If I would have seen this post on the 4th, I may not have have felt SO COMPELLED to post on the same subject in PB. 'Certain' people's posts were driving me MAD - I just couldn't believe how well you were keeping your cool!! I did notice the hints you kept dropping, and I'm still *amazed* at the obliviousness of certain people. I'm just relieved to see that you got a chance to vent. :)Keep up the good posts! - I'm gonna go back to being a good lurker. :)
BTW (off topic) glad to hear yr feelin' better - lose the guilt, man!warmest wishes, c

To be honest I felt relieved to see your post.
BTW, being civil is much easier for me over the
internet. In real time, I don't take you know what
from anyone! I often wonder how my little hints
get deciphered. Sometimes I'm not even sure what
they mean. It gets really bad when I start quoting
chinese fortune cookies. One person said not to loose my cool and to counter
bad information with my own studies. But I get mad
because I feel that this is also a distraction to new
people to the newsgroup to flood them with useless information
that they will never be able to decode that is very scientific.
And then to get dirty I subtly pull a tactic like
stating my credentials vs the others, which I feel may backfire
by actually offend some people who don't have the priveledges
in life that I have had. No win situation. When I woke up the
next day and didn't see any "please be civil notes", I patted myself
on the back. ;) (sorry you got nailed).-John

I can tell you, hint's ain't gonna work.
However, in order to stay within the bounds of Civility, I don't think we have much choice. Indeed, I wouldn't want newbies seeing us screaming either--you know, like fingernails on a blackboard.
It does get on my nerves to see The Latest Thing plastered all over every thread.
There's always a new Latest Thing. I'm trying to think when I outgrew that Everybody Must Take This! feeling, and what stage of development it represented. Somewhere on the spectrum of Separation. and understandably long and agonizing process for those of us with hairy childhoods. . .

Hi Zo,I agree that the hints aren't going to work
with the person plastering all over the place.
I also feel the new reader hopefully has the
intellegence to realize what is going on. I
guess I was just hoping the hints are a
worthwhile substituion for the new reader to
interpret (since I can't just SPELL out what I
really what to say, it may be uncivil).Anyways, I do hope everyone here does well,
including EVERY newbie. Clearly everyone deserves
their chance at support, including those who are a bit
zealous. Obviously there were events in such
a person's life that lead up to such behaviour that
maybe we don't fully understand. In the end we
need to support everybody's recovery. Thanks for sharing your insight and experience.

>(since I can't just SPELL out what I really what to say, it may be uncivil).
I am convinced there is way to tell someone they are being an ass whilst also remaining civil.
I just haven't figured it out yet.
Working on it,

"...tell someone they are being an ass whilst also remaining civil."
Not hard, Zo. Put yourself in the frame of mind of some haughtly British lord scolding a new, slightly retarded servant. Remain utterly cool & composed, precisely polite & 'speak' to them in that frame of 'voice'. Don't accuse them of anything, just humour them so to speak & the sarcasm will shine through although you've done everything correctly.
Oh, I shouldn't give ideas but when I had older, bigger brothers who could always badly beat me up, I learned to destroy with words & they could never go running to my Mom to complain. She never got it.
