Or better yet, you don't need to ask, you could just be friendly and make a circle of friends. Maybe one will develop into something more. And if not, maybe one will know someone who will be the right one for you.
People who know and like you are still the best referral sources for dates. :) And they're fun and assuage loneliness in the meantime.
I have the impression that you aren't religious, but there surely must be other types of places with similar social structures. Do you have any hobbies? Have you volunteered for a campaign? Our local shelters are always looking for dog walkers and socializers. Those places are great for making friends.
