It's a form of therapy that allows you to process upsetting memories (like the ones that play a loop in your head or keep getting triggered)so that you can actually deal with the emotions they stir up. It really allowed me to put events from my past behind me, instead of dragging them along with my immediate experience, if that makes sense. It is often utilized for those with post-traumatic stress.
It was accredited as a form of therapy in 1995 (relatively recently) and is best done by a certified therapist. I like this form of therapy as you have a finite goal, and once it's reached, the treatment is finished.
