If you project this totally positive image in order for him to think well of you, who would he be thinking well of? A false image. Not you.
People are capable of caring for flawed and imperfect others. But in order for him to care for you, he needs to know you. If you like, you can spin the truth in its most positive fashion. But if he doesn't know the truth then he won't know you.
