I've done quite a bit of research on this one and treadmills and elliptical machines are usually rated the best. Personally, I own an elliptical machine and really like it. My only advice would be to get a fairly decent one if you can afford it.

Another great workout tool is to buy an exercise ball. They are very good for toning your midsection and much softer than trying to do crunches on the hard floor.

I'm also a big fan of exercise DVDs...
