you couldn't have stated it better- I honestly belive her reaction has much more to do with her age than any other factor. you did an admirable job of trying to stay close to her grandparents at a young age, and honestly do you think she would have preferred to be away from her friends to visit family who may not have recognized her? my son is 13, and nothing I do ever seems to be the right choice either.
