Wow! I could never relate to "self-pity" except in case one was feeling sad or down, and someone ELSE deemed it "self-pity." A HUGE no-no in the States.
I believe thoroughly in "self-pity"---it really translates (IMHO) into honoring your grief and sadness.
I don't know how it could be otherwise translated.
