Jai,
When I was visiting Japan, I went to Nagasaki. What a moving experience that was. And surreal, to be a very western looking woman (red hair and very fair skin) among the Japanese, viewing the impact of the bomb from their perspective. Ground zero is a place with such an emotional impact. As was the museum, with all the pictures, stories, artifacts...

And Nagasaki itself is a beatiful and wondrous city. It reminded me a lot of San Francisco with its bay and hills. There were even trolleys. But I was most struck by the mixture of 17th century buildings and structures, such as the Spectacle Bridge, a two arch stone bridge which looks like a pair of spectacles with its reflection in the water and post war buildings. It seems like it was either or. Very old or very new. The Spectacle Bridge survived the blast with little more than scorch marks on its stones, which you can still see. Amazing.
