Social Worker and expectations

Posted by Adoptme on May 17, 2004, at 3:31:43

Hi

I am a social worker doing community development work and I facilitate self help groups for women in an urban poor community.

I received very sad news today that my co-workers' husband had died. I took the news with me to the group she usually facilitates. One responded saying,"Oh no! Thats too bad....hey X can you pass me some cake?".

I was upset with insensitive comments and in-appropriate talk during the whole session. Today I have been thinking about how I was under the impression that I was expectationless with regards work. I started thinking if the group I facilitate (have been facilitating for 3 years now) might react similarly if they were to hear sad news pertaining to me. Can someone please help me understand what I am going through...because I sure don't have a clue!
