I recently read a book
"The Last Week: A Day-by-Day Account of Jesus's Final Week in Jerusalem" that said that the resurrection of the dead was a relatively recent development in Jewish theology in the time of Jesus. It said it had begun about 2 centuries before Christ as an answer to when righteous jews who were killed (around the time of the Maccabees) would be rewarded. I think it would be the older definition of Hell that you mentioned,.
