If you look at some of the major holidays worshiped by the Catholic Church and Protestant Churches they seem to all corespond to Pagan holidays.

Christmas = Winter Solstice
Easter = Spring Equinox

Easter also signifies rebirth in the manner Christ dies and was reborn. This is like winter becoming spring in the northern hemisphere. Eggs too are a major symbol of Easter. I think also the "Christmas Tree" is a pretty strong pagan symbol. Now I would say that all of this is because the Christains were trying to gain influence and one of the major obstacles were the major fesivals during the year. Why not convert those too by changing the dates of Xmas and Easter. Note that the orthodox churches celebrate these holidays at different times.
