Alpha lipoic acid is a potent chelator of lead and mercury. It has a halflife of 3 hours. So be aware that if you have any suspicion of accumulating metals over the years, this substance is going to stir them up and spread them around, unless you take it every 3 hours to prevent the redepositing of metals that were loosened up.
At chelation forums, it is not unusual to see people take alpha lipoic acid at doses of 2mg to 5mg every 3 hours. They work up to 50mg after weeks or months.
And of course, the symptoms of heavy metal accumulation look exactly like depression, anxiety, schizo-spectrum, and low energy. So for many of us, this could be an issue. In such cases, alpha lipoic makes sense, but should be dosed cautiously. Its halflife is extremely important. Doses every 3 hours to do it right. Otherwise risk moving metals from storage to somewhere else causing new problems.
