I haven't heard that Taurine has trouble crossing the blood/brain barrier. Looking at some old 2006 posts by Larry Hoover (the alternative guru here), he indicates quite the opposite and that as a result, it works in minutes. He cautioned not to take it too late in the day as it may cause insomnia (he said leave at least 6 hours between last taurine and bedtime).
Elsewhere, I recall reading that you can take it with food (unlike some of the other amino acids).
One quirk I've read about (and noticed in myself) is that it might make you feel chilly based on its influence on the hypothalamus.
Taurine helps me with anxiety, but then I'm taking clonazepam (a prescription benzodiazipine) too.
