> Hi to everyone. I'd like to hear from everyone who takes Magnesium. What form of Magnesium do you take (magnesium oxide, magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate, Mg-taurate, etc. etc.)? Why do you take that particular form? Have you tried other forms? If you've noticed a difference in the effects that different magnesium compounds have on you, can you explain the difference to me?
When you're taking salts of magnesium (all except the oxide are salts), you have to consider that you're getting more than magnesium itself. You get magnesium, and what is called a counter ion. You could get citric acid, in the case of magnesium citrate. Or the amino acid glycine, from the glycinate. Or taurine, from the taurinate. The anion, the counter ion to the Mg++ ion, whatever it might be, can have physiological effects, too. Glycine has psychotropic activity. Taurine has psychotropic activity. Chloride ion or citrate ion or hydroxide (from milk of magnesia), and others, do not have psychotropic activity. So, choosing your magnesium salt can involve choosing the activity of the counter ion.
> I have taken Magnesium Oxide, Magnesium Citrate and Magnesium glycinate. These days, I prefer the chelated Magnesium glyinate. I take it at night, and it feels as if it is the most effective one for relaxing me, helping me sleep, and for alleviating PMS; however, I hear others say the same about citrate.
One more factor is solubility. I think the citrate liberates the magnesium ions quite readily, as does the chloride. I'm less sure about the others.
> One other question: Do you take your Magnesium with Calcium, or do you separate them? I used to take them together, but lately I've been taking Calcium during the day and Magnesium right before bed. If I take the Magnesium glycinate too late at night, I have even more difficulty getting out of bed than usual the following morning. Instead of a pleasant relaxing effect, I feel more sluggish, so the timing is definitely important.I use any old magnesium salt, and I don't give a thought to calcium.
I'm just not that worried about the details, for this supp.
