Hidden meanings and private jokes/ Dr Bob

I still read the site (after all these years) and have noticed some private communication in public where one can read the hidden meaning or jab at someone else. I see this often enough to ask...how is this civil? Could this not be done in Babblemail? I would give an example but that could lead me to make someone feel accused or put down.
