consent is an interesting notion.

informed consent is an interesting notion.

what is required?

comprehension?

if you can rephrase something that has been given to you is that a mark of comprehension?

if you can answer multi-guess questions is that a mark of comprehension?

is that enough for informed consent or is more required?

lets say...

someone knows that what they post is publicly viewable... they know employers / family members could follow their cookies / posting history. lets say they are planning on topping themselves in the near future thus they do not consider the possible negative consequences will affect them.

they think the negative consequences will not happen to them...

but that is based on their mental state at the time...

informed consent or not?

are they competent to offer informed consent at that time?

it would seem to me that obtaining 'informed consent' from people who have (self proclaimed) history / current experience of mental illness would be problematic...

so lets just keep it all publicly accessible
and not research
and we don't need to worry about ethics committees
and somehow or other...

what?

this is supposed to be for the good of the boards?

dr bob...

don't you think that that is asking us to trust you just a little bit too much?

because...

what if you are wrong.

i know its unlikely...

;-)

but what if you are?

my understanding... is that there are ethical committees and safegards in order to protect people from some nasty things that can happen that they may not fully appreciate if left to their own devices. because sometimes people can have wonderful intentions... but all the good intentions in the world can still result in harm sometimes.

and it concerns me that it appears to me that you have done your best to avoid being 'constrained' by standard ethical guidelines regarding this site and posters on this site...

it concerns me a great deal.

and i think it has concerned others at various points.

and i think it is important.

because you can talk about the risk being 'slight'

but if things i have posted here f*ck up my future then you can go on about the good of the boards as much as you like i will still be pretty f*cking mad at you for archiving those posts indefinately...

and why are you doing it? so other posters can learn from them (the 'good of the group') so posts remain publicly accessible in which case... quoting us ain't considered research?

i'm feeling a lot uneasy...
