Dinah,
I think you are a kind and caring and sympathetic person (and secretly wish you were kinder, more caring, and more sympathetic to YOURSELF) and we need bunches of people like you, who are willing to move toward people that say they hurt.

The most important thing is doing what feels right to you (except being mean to yourself), and responding to others in a way you can live with.

It'd be a pretty cold world if everybody took my approach. And, variety is what it's all about in most things. We all bring different things to the boards here, and you should certainly not ever apologize or feel bad or foolish for your genuine responses and gifts. Instead, you should feel proud that you do what you think is right. And, if others don't like it, too bad. And, if you get a 'gotcha' every once in a while, join the club; you're in good company here cause we all get got from time to time (even the cynics among us).

And, I don't believe that's a bullseye on your back. The bullseye is on your foot, where you keep shooting yourself by being so harsh and mean to yourself. One of these days I want to read about how you put yourself FIRST.

(For clarification, those are two separate topics I managed to mix in; the one about you being kind to others, and the one about wanting you to be kinder to yourself. They seemed to sort of dovetail as I was writing, but they are actually two different things in case that wasn't very clear.)
