re moderation of lostboync

Posted by katekite on June 15, 2002, at 17:23:17

Hi,

On the psycho-psycho-babble section of the website lostboyNC (sp?) wrote something along the lines of the following:
that major depression and other axis I disorders should not be considered psychological, but rather neurological, and that spending time or money on psychological treatments is a total waste.

Dr. Bob responded that the writer should not over-generalize.

LostboyNC has been otherwise inflammatory and so far is displaying poor netiquette, swearing, capitals etc. I appreciate Dr. Bob moderating the site and trying to keep people civil.

However, telling someone they are over-generalizing seems argumentative to me, it questions the validity of their opinion. Saying that someone is over-generalizing when they say all psychiatric disorders are neurologically based and that therapy is a waste seems like just an indirect way to make an opinionated reply.

If it's the inaccuracy of the statement that's wrong -- well, much of what everyone says is technically incorrect. I know some of what I've said is technically incorrect too...but nothing has been corrected for contact before that I've seen.

If it seemed that that statement would be inflammatory to the many people who post there about particular psychological therapies (me included), it probably is, to some. But that board is for the discussion of therapy, so the comment was in the right place. It was a comment on the utility of psychological treatment itself.

I am not defending the lack of tact, the swearing, etc. Obviously peace has to be kept and I think Dr. Bob does a fantastic job of that.

However, I do believe everyone should be allowed strong opinions. By choosing to occasionally ask people not to say particular things that aren't in themselves particularly offensive, Dr. Bob is influencing the character of what is posted and what people expect to read. By being the only physician posting, he may be indirectly steer people to and from opinions. Is that what is wanted?

Kate
