Why does Gabapentin induce hypomania/euphoria

Posted by jmb2012 on September 10, 2011, at 17:03:22

Hi. I was hoping to get some insight into the possible reasons behind Gabapentin's ability to induce mild hypomania/euphoria/ in a person who has never experienced a manic or hypomanic episode before. It has distinct but short lived antidepressant/mood-lifting and pro social effects. Lyrica messes with my vision too much.

Does it have to do with it's effects on calcium channels? If so would something like Verapamil cause a similar effect.

Clonazepam does not cause any kind of mood lifting just a general slowing of thoughts. So I don't think GABA has everything to do with it.

Coming off of GP is horrid. But it needs to happen. I have never experienced physical anxiety symptoms before taking GP- palpitations, inner-restlessness- and I am completely at a loss as to the possible causes and remedies for the positive and negative effects of this mysterious drug.

Any speculation (preferably with some kind of sourcing) would be tremendously appreciated.
